Wow, it really is incredible how bad it got in many areas of the country. I don't think America ever allowed itself to admit how bad it was. Like you see old movies from the 70's, and NYC is dark and gritty, but it's still alive. Those neighborhoods are completely dead, there's no life left there.

Really is remarkable that those were saved at all.

It's funny - I had a distant cousin from Poland who came to visit in the early 80s, and when they got onto the Cross-Bronx after picking her up the airport, she looked around in disbelief and said "Was there a war here?" This woman (who was a survivor of the atrocities that happened in Poland during WWII) thought that it looked that bad.

Agree NYC4life. I only spent 3 months in New York, but I loved being up in the Bronx and would have never imagined these area looking like this. The service drive off the expressway shown above still looks kinds of messy sans the tires, but I've been up and down Tremont and looks nothing like what is shown above today. It's pretty busy and lots of stores.

Although, I think a few of the addresses above might be off by a little. But they are close.

Still looks somewhat the same. However all the buildings looks a lot cleaner and there's no trash. I hope someday the Bronx Courthouse gets renovated.

Yeah the area and that abandon courthouse still needs a little spruce up, but thankfully is nothing like back then. The area still getting develop. As you notice from this recent photo, something is going up on the abandon lot next to it. Also a charter school suppose to go in at the abandon courthouse.

It's typical crappy redevelopment that most cities have seen in the last 20 years. As for single family homes in the bronx ? The north bronx actually has plenty of them, just older craftsmen homes, and what looks to be a few older mansions ?
