San Antonio only lost one - the Bitters store next to El Jarro is closing. That was a no-brainer, since they opened up a drive-thru 75 feet from there a couple of years ago.

A lot of the closures are of the "urban coffee shop" project stores-- making the coffeeshop experience accessible to those in urbanized areas where one wouldn't find a place like that beyond a few "jump the trend" coffee shops.

What's interesting is the Starbucks on 71 at 183 is still under construction.

Yeah, I don't know whether to be glad or sad about that. Two downtown stores in Houston are closing (I think that leaves only two or three more-- one in the tunnel system). This is bad simply b/c we're losing stuff downtown, but also good b/c it'll open the doors for independent businesses to fill the void. If anything, this move has cemented the Starbucks company as a "suburb outlet" which means if the suburbs fail, Starbucks will fail with them.

You can have the ones in New Orleans. I hate Starbucks. You can't top PJ's ( http://www.pjscoffee.com/customer/index.php ) , CC's, ( http://www.communitycoffee.com/ccc/CoffeeHouse.aspx ) or the atmosphere of Rue de la Course. Starbucks is the McDonald's of coffee houses. It is not authentic and they can close every one of them in New Orleans for all I care. There was a huge controversy when they did come here. We didn't want them and people fought tooth and nail to keep them out of the city. Now that they are closing shop, maybe we'll be blessed to have them close all of their stores in New Orleans. Within a heartbeat one of these local New Orleans coffee shops would move in: http://www.neworleansonline.com/newo...?locationID=77

Yep, although that has got to be the slowest I've seen a building that size go up. They seem to be using a lot of special materials though.

Another Starbucks also opened in Pflugerville a month or so ago and the place always seems busy. So it seems they are still opening stores, maybe choosing locations more carefully though.

At the end of West Gray in Houston there are two across the street from each other (about 120 feet apart), and both are staying open and both do a good business.

Just checked the Starbucks...there are 74 stores in the Austin metro area. That's just way too many.

San Antonio has 64
Houston has 253
Dallas/FT.Worth has 319
Tulsa has 32
Oklahoma City has 37

I myself stick to local coffee houses. One of the most well known in the Austin area is the Spider House, also several others around town that are really good.

^^ Agreed. Plus Starbucks makes you PAY for wireless access. At local shops, it's always complimentary with a purchase.

Hey, we have tons of local places in Seattle, but Starbucks works as intended-- in a pinch.

Even Spy House isn't as good as it used to be. back in the 90s it was just a coffee house, now it has a small kitchen and changed the inside up. I liked Insomnia but even that has changed. But both Houston and Austin have several good local joints. Since I just drink espresso Starbucks is fine, as long as it is not burnt "blah"

Alexjon, many moons ago Starbucks was a "local" Seattle coffee shot ;-)

Ciao,

lol, I know! Western Ave., then moved to Pike Place Market. The exterior of the market shop is the original, but inside is that horrid "early 21st century" earthtone layout.

The heart is still there, however. They have different blends they make specifically for that location. A Verona from there tastes much different from elsewhere in the city.

My favorite coffee shop in Seattle is Uncle Elizabeth's, though. Or Stumptown.

i spent a day in spider house before my wife and i moved to south africa... it was a good day - brought back a lot of my UT days. blogged about a particularly thought-provoking part of it here: http://theburkholders.blogspot.com/2...-quote-to.html

Looks like there are 44 in New Orleans--notta one going to close. I know few people that go to Starbucks. As stated, everybody I know goes to the local houses.
