I really hope they do something with this. The base of the current building is awful. I pick up my basic needs from that Walgreens on my way home from work, but I'd be more than willing to see something replace it that would prove more valuable to Michigan Ave. They ain't moving though. I'd wager this to be one of the busiest of the chain in the entire city. Only here can you walk in at 3 a.m in the morning and find the store crowded and about 15-20 people in line.

Looks like they are suggesting balconies on top? I like the way they've divided the facade and added some pattern.

I think that might actually be the hotel component. Keep in mind if it's a Four Points or Hyatt Place, that's the type of building that those brands fit into: low to mid-rise, no more than 100-150 rooms, semi-budget priced, 2-3 star ratings. The fact that this one might have a full green roof and be of a better design quality than your typical suburban Hyatt Place (ala Lombard, Il) already makes this one a 'win'.

Oh, it's gonna be a hotel? Now I know what it reminds me of!

Actually, suburban hotels these days aren't that bad. The new Hyatt Places (as opposed to converted ones) are pretty nice. Then there are chains like Aloft and Cambria which put a premium on modern design.

Nice try lol! - I'll judge it better when I see more than an aerial rendering that shows me just a basic, schematic box.

The hotel is actually the "ghost" box in the middle. The U-shaped building is one of two midrise apartment/retail buildings.

That's interesting - guess I was wrong, oh well - but how could they announce a hotel operator soon (according to the article) if that isn't even a component of the new design? Do you know if that's been designed yet as compared to just the ghost box, or will that be shown as part of the revised community meeting in December?

huh? That weird's cause I really like the base of 777 N. Michigan. What's not to like about black marble with white glossy brick. I wish that glossy kind of brick was used more. I really like the 60's style and the "seven seven seven" lettering. I always thought it was a classy looking building in a 60's kind of way. How is marble worse than all the pre-cast concrete around there? Just needs a good power wash is all.

I like marble and glazed bricks as well.

I don't like this building.

The whole 777 thing above that entry =

Amazing how we were just talking about 777's ugliness just a couple weeks ago. I wish we knew more about how real this proposal was. It's fabulous that someone was at least seriously thinking about it.

I don't know much about the Harper court area, can someone enlighten me? Are they trying to make the area more like the north side now? I like the design, but I can honestly say the only times I have ever been that far south in Chicago is to go to the museum of science and industry.

I saw a bunch of cars and trucks parked on the Chicago Spire ramp again yesterday. Everyone keep your eyes open and see if you can figure out what is going on. Perhaps they are re-surveying the site or something. This time there were a couple pick up trucks including one that looked like it had those big metal tool cabinets in the back. In total there were probably 6 vehicles this time, four inside the gate and two on the sidewalk. They were all unmarked though so I have no idea why they were there.

It's nice to see some life once again. All the proposals look really good too, especially Harper court.

Hopefully this next boom will have much better architecture with LaGrange out of the picture. Maybe his firms failure will convince other architects that kitschy BS isn't very profitable...

Probably just periodic safety inspections. . .

^^^ Most likely...

In other news:

The Admiral is set to have funding close on the 18th or 19th of November and ground breaking is scheduled for November 30th:

http://edgewatercb.blogspot.com/2010...ak-ground.html

The Dominicks at that corner is opening on the 11th so that would suggest that they weren't kidding when they said they were just waiting for the Dominicks construction to end.

^ Good news!

So here is what will be u/c in 2011:

Admiral
Roosevelt dorm
2520 Lincoln Park
McDonald's thingy
Ritz Carlton Residences
Likely another McCormick place hotel

Am I missing any? That is potentially 6 highrises u/c, from an all time high of perhaps 50 or so in 2007 and 2008?
