Thanks, I cut those 4 + Fremont Lofts. The foundation piles were actually driven for Glashaus and 1349 South Wabash, so construction technically began on those. But if anyone can verify that they're dead then they can also be removed.

The proposal that just blows my mind that it wasn't started has been Millennium Park Plaza. I mean it was even designated as appartments before the appartment boom even started. Whoever is developing this project has really blown it IMHO.

Fountain Square was also a hard defeat.

i would agree that fountain square is 99% DOA, but just this week one of the retail business in the existing building on site has a "going out of business" sign implying that they're being forced out due to their lease expiring.

is this a sign that the owners are starting to clear out the retail tenants of the building for redevelopment? probably not, but i'll be keeping a close eye on the retail space to see if a new business moves in.

That's exactly how I feel. The last I heard was they were going to revise their plan to include 180 smaller apts instead of the 80+ larger units originally planned. That was about 2 years ago and they said they were waiting for a better apt market. Then came nothing...

You would have thought 180 smaller apts would have been easy to rent considering that's not a huge amount and the excellent location.

I dunno...maybe they changed their mind and are working on something else. I just hope something happens quick because that spot is an eyesore now.

West Loop Hotel

Talk of hotels in the gen. devpt thread got me thinking about this: Does anyone know where that West Loop high-rise hotel proposal (name escaping me, but I think it's a Tokyo-based chain) - something like 23-25 stories or so - is in the approval process? I have a recollection of reading somewhere (Chicago Journal?) an article that basically raised the question of whether it was being blocked or stalled because it wasn't planned to be union (which by the way has nothing whatsoever to do with a zoning matter as far as I know and should be illegal if it's technically not - but, hey, aldermanic prerogative trumps the law, right?)....is that still the case, if it was then? What's the status?

Do you mean One South Halsted ? If so, it is currently in the 14 month approval process, I think the process ends this month, also it is a 50 story building, and will be the tallest building in the west loop.

The Roosevelt dorms, One57 and other buildings are going for this "different shades of blue" glass, and I can't help but think this style is going to look dated very soon.

We'll see, right now I'm liking it.
I definatly could see a risk of overusing it on too many buildings but if used sporadically its provides a nice change up to the streetscape.

I think he means a mid-block project on Clinton Street. direceltly across the street from Union Station that came up a few years ago.

I was kind of wondering what happened to that proposal a few days ago as well.

What's "dated" today may very well be considered historic in fifty years.

Honestly, if all buildings were designed to be "timeless," we would have a pretty boring city. It's the state-of-the art or latest-in-design buildings that make the streetscape so interesting, provided they are employed in moderation. But yes, if ten of these glass towers were built in close proximity they would become the new flesh-toned precast style.

The views from 1225 Old Town

These shots were taken from the 11th floor amenities level earlier today:

Larger versions: west, east, southeast, southwest.

I'll have a video tour live within a day or two.

Meh. I suppose you get a great penthouse effect in every apartment, but if I'm not surrounded by highrises, I at least want a view of the skyline like SoNo. These views seem to be situated on the side of the natural sightlines though...

The views from SoNo

It's pretty hard to match the views from SoNo, as you can see in this YouTube video.

Pleasantly surprised is the right term.

Agreed. However, I think Roosevelt's transition is pretty subtle and forms more of a general gradient. And Tri-Hotel is actually an explicit pattern. I think these features will lengthen its lifespan a bit. At least its some color...something different.
