Both have showed up on bidclerk for construction starts around late 2009 early 2010, I believe, but there's enough ambiguity in the market in re: credit availability, unit demand due to recession etc. that those are hardly slam dunk start dates. At this point, I think it's at least fair to say that both are still active projects but realistically perhaps a year off from starting.

The last thing I remember hearing about McClurg was that NW was trying to get their grubby paws on that site.... hope this doesn't happen to kill that great project, but with the current market trends, NW might be the most deep-pocketed game in that area for a while.

This is slightly off topic but did any of you go to critical mass last night? I saw the sweetest costume ever. There was a guy dressed up as the Hancock building and I was wondering if that was any of you guys?

That would be exceedingly unfortunate... that proposal is excellent all around - great density, great design, great urban form, great mix of use. Further, we really don't need even MORE land off the tax rolls in that area.

Are there any large land-owning institutions that have proven to be anything but the worst stewards of quality urban design? U of C is, at best, a very mixed bag in Hyde Park (leaning towards the negative but not entirely) - but UIC and NU are mostly atrocious in this regard.

The problem is that these large land-owning institutions view their respective areas as completely unique realms, set aside from the surrounding city. Usually, they view this in a positive light, as if their campuses were some sort of "respite" from the relentless march of density in the city. I suppose I welcome this in a way, in places like UIC - different neighborhoods should have different characteristics, and I find it refreshing to drive along Roosevelt and see a half-mile of green athletic fields.

The problem occurs at their borders, where their own self-contained realm must meet and engage the surrounding city. Often, they end up building figurative "walls" - uncomfortable spaces that discourage free flow between the institution and the city around it. In some ways, this is intentional - the designers wanted to "keep the riffraff out". Or, if you prefer a less racially-motivated explanation, the uncomfortable borders provide a contrast to the often pleasant spaces within, making those spaces seem even nicer.

I personally like Northwestern's Streeterville campus. There are some uncomfortable spaces, but I like the idea of a neighborhood being anchored by a large institution and surrounded with dense skyscraper residential. Their newest buildings, although y'all decry them as Postmodern, create pleasant, well-proportioned spaces along the street and in their lobbies, and have visual interest. The hospital traffic ensures bustling sidewalks, as well. The fact that Northwestern keeps fretting about adequate parking is caused by the city's perennial failure to run a decent transit line into one of the densest and most congested parts of the city. First a subway was planned back in the 70s, but that plan was canceled, and then a BRT line took its place in a more recent plan that everyone seems to ignore.

Do yourself a favor and don't investigate the answer to that question.
