Downtown San Jose

Some shots I've taken around downtown San Jose over the past few months:

Caltrain, leaving SF:

We certainly don't get many San Jose threads, so thanks for posting this! It's good to see it get a little representation on the forum.

Been at that train station many times. And a taqueria with a neon sign can't possibly have the best Mexican in the world.

Yet another excellent thread from Tech12. Much progress on the buildings under construction since I've been down that way or seen updates in the Bay Area thread. Thanks!

This thread certainly brings back memories (???????????).......

What am I talking about?! lol SJ has become unrecognizable since I was last there in '87. Well, okay, a few of the pics I recognize (e.g. Heritage building, the former B of A bldg, one or two bldgs from the 20s or 30s... that area). This town is really booming! Close to a million now.

Thanks, tech12, for sharing these.

You fed my curiosity, I was curious about SJ and when I would be able to see a thread on SSP! The whole Bay Area is interesting, 3 significant/respective cities composing the area, almost triangular from where each are situated, S.F, OAK, S.J.

I gather from downtown S.F & downtown OAK to downtown SJ is about 1 hour away ?

S.J is rather interesting, being one of my first times viewing it street level, the city contains some low/mid rise scrapers, quite more urbanized that I previously thought, and contains many storefronts. Interesting thread, I'll be looking for more of San Jose here in the future.

From downtown SF to downtown Oakland is about 20 minutes by BART, much of it spent under the Bay. Much of Oakland is more convenient to downtown SF than the outer reaches of SF itself (a fact that the people who live in those outer reaches complain about a lot) because BART is entirely grade-separated (subway or elevated) whereas plenty of the Muni light rail to SF's outer neighborhoods isn't.

SJ is a good deal further--it can take 3 hours or more by car in rush hour. On CalTrain it's 1 hour on the express that makes the fewest stops, more like 1.5 hours on the local.

The height of SJ buildings is limited by the FAA because of where the airport is (the pics show planes passing right over the city pretty low). But it sprawls across quite a lot of land and, like LA, the urban zone encompasses a number of municipalities, not just SJ.

I too appreciate seeing a thread on it.

I think you're exaggerating just a little, aside from the Caltrain time. BART to Oakland takes maybe 10 minutes from Embarcadero station, and 3 hours to SJ? During rush hour worst case scenario traffic maybe. Most of the time I've driven it's taken anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how bad traffic is and how fast you drive (also whether you take 280 or 101).

Like BTinSF said, the skyline is held back by the airport being so close, so the FAA set a pretty low height limit. Downtown is actually pretty urban and vibrant though, which surprised me the first time I really explored it. It's a nice place, that to me feels both busy and relaxed at the same time. Most neighborhoods do sprawl out pretty badly though.

Haha, it may seem that way, but in my opinion that sign is actually correct in it's statement that they have the best Mexican food in the world (well, tacos quesadillas and burritos at least...because that's all they serve). I've never been to that La Taqueria, but the original is in San Francisco's Mission district, and it's been there since the 1970's, so they must be doing something right (they have a much bigger neon sign too). I recommend it highly...only problem is their prices have gone up a lot in the past few years, probably because the yuppie hordes got wind of the place, and they can afford to pay out the ass for food. That place is maybe my favorite single restaurant in existence, no joke. Gotta defend it's delicious honor. Oh yeah they have really good aguas frescas too. (damn, this is what happens when posting while hungry )

Don't worry, the SF neighborhood fix will be replenished soon.

I was going on memory, so you made me check the schedule. It's 13 minutes Montgomery St. to 12th St Oakland (he said downtown). So I was off by 7 minutes, you by 3. West Oakland to Embarcadero is only 8 minutes but I wouldn't call West Oakland "downtown" and Embarcadero is not quite "downtown" either.

As for driving, the only time I recall driving toward SJ (I was only going to Moffitt Field), I left home around 8 AM and got there at 11. It would have taken longer to get to downtown SJ. I have no idea if that's typical traffic. I'd never do it again willingly. Since I was going to Moffitt, I went 101. If I was going to SJ I'd probably go 280 and that would probably be quicker but I've never done it at rush hour.

Interesting. Wow and I thought Sacramento was suburban looking. San Jose is like totally exurban. It's like so LA but without the bitch'n bling. Actually it's more like Anaheim without the funpark

I have never seen a picture of San Jose before, so this was enlightening. You certainly covered a lot, right down to the mundane little details that your photography manages to make interesting. Nice capture.
