Colfax, CA

Colfax is a small town (around 1,500) in the Sierra foothills about 50 miles northeast of Sacramento along Hwy 80. It's also about 20 minutes away from where I grew up (Grass Valley). There is an Amtrak stop downtown Colfax along the California Zephyr line.

One of my best friends came along for the day...

After we woke her up walking by, this beautiful girl came immediately over for a long pet!

My friend went to this elementary school when she was a kid. They closed it down after it was found to be located on a fault. Now it's a community center of some sort....at least that's what the sign outside said.

Amtrak Station

The old train station doesn't specifically service Amtrak, but, is rather occupied by a museum dedictated to the history of the railroad and local area. There was a really nice (and talkative lady) working inside.

This building is being renovated as a hotel.

My friend also told me this place has been the same business for over 20 years.

Not many people out on a beautiful, sunny, Saturday...it was 65...in January!

The famous SSP self portrait...

I am not alone today however...

The local library

Why do friends always like to take pictures of each other taking pictures?

I saw the first Jurassic Park in this theatre when I was 16. Too bad it is closed now

This was only the first stop of our day...will probably post the other photos tomorrow.

Nice pictures. I've wondered what this place looked like, since I am reading a book on the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad right now. Colfax was named after Schuyler Colfax, a proponent of the Railroad, Speaker of the House, and future Vice President under Ulysses S. Grant. Before that, the place was called "Illinoistown".

I thought you would like the school. Very cool!

Thanks for all the comments. And thanks xzmattzx for posting the info on the naming of Colfax. I had read about that but was too lazy to post it!

To jetsetter, my camera is a Fuji FinePix S9100. The LCD cracked a couple months ago so when I get fed up with the view finder, I'll be getting something new.
