There's a really gorgeous example of brutalism in Oslo, some govt building. Anyone know its name?

I think the frieze is by Piccasso. It's the tower behind that is perfectly composed, can't get a shot of its form though.

I did some time in there. Weldon Library is another brutalist building on campus that I actually like a bit.

I'm surprised you didn't mention London, Ontario's notorious example, the court house:

I love how Paris manages to turn this quite 'sterile' form of architecture into something cozy.

Brutalism is a relatively cheap and quick building method, if you can account for the amount of labor that goes into fabricating the frames for all of the concrete pours. I wonder if this is the main reason why so many schools and businesses invest in it: concrete is durable and accesible and pretty versatile. Pegging the style as ugly or meaningless is subjective, but I do find it hard to believe that there are that many people out there constructing these types of buildings solely for their aesthetic appeal.

I saw this building on the news last night, and investigated it. It's the international Monetary Funds Building in D.C.

And here's a few more from the abundant supply in Pittsburgh.

The bayer broadcast Center for the Arts, A Hub for public radio and TV.

PNC Bank (not completely adherent to the style I think)

4615 Forbes Avenue

Another Shot of the ominous Wean Hall

To think they knocked down this classic in Erie PA:

For this brutal piece of awfulness... billed as the "ultramodern" Erie Hilton in the late 1960s (now called the Avalon Hotel - a complete DUMP; the crappy green stuff added on in the early 90s makes it look even worse, if that is even possible):

I love Brutalist architecture, if ants were people all of our buildings would be brutalist structures.

The only Brutalist stadium? San Diego's Qualcomm stadium might be the largest example of Brutalist architecture.

San Diego's most famous building, the Salk Institute is a fine example of Brutalism.

I feel that SD's sunny climate makes Brutalism shine more than say, a NorthEast climate.

Both photos from flikr.

I think any style of architecture has is masters and wannabes. Louis I Kahn would have been a master of the style. The Salk Institute above as well as the Bangladesh capital complex in the photo above are testimony to the power of his work, and give a good indication of what other wannabe architects were aiming for with their work.
