Well, it's the same render that was posted with the Chronicle article above.

I'm glad it's going where it's going and not off 610 like they had been kicking around at one point.

This should help continue the development of the downtown area, which is shaping up to be a nice little sports/convention/entertainment destination where there used to be little else than surface parking and abandoned buildings.

Anyone who had the idea that Enron/Astros/Minute Maid Park had no effect on the area never went through there before they started building it. It was a veritable shithole.

Interesting development in addition to the new Dynamo stadium. The only thing I dislike about it is the name.

Looks great, nice to see the stadium (already) spurring possible development in the neighborhood.

After nearly five years of intense negotiations, the Houston Dynamo are gearing up to break ground on a long-awaited East End stadium at the end of this month.

The only remaining minor hurdle is approval of the newly created Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone 15, a public financing tool that encourages public-private partnerships and is based on increased tax revenue generated by the development of the stadium.

Harris County Commissioners Court and Houston City Council will consider the measure it next week. If all goes well, the Major League Soccer team will break ground on the new stadium Jan. 29, marking ...

In related news the Dynamos just got moved to the Eastern Conference because of the unbalanced conferences since Vancouver and Portland joined. I wish they just did a single table. I think this stadium really shows the expansion and growth of the MLS. As a fan of soccer and architecture this something beautiful!

I love that this is going up. I can't wait to see it. But I still say it's too small. If we're building a new stadium for them to replace the 32,000 seat Robertson, why only put in 22,000 seats? Why not a 55,000 seat stadium that could serve as a venue for other events?

Never saw this thread.

The stadium looks beautiful! I'm glad it's near to starting. I would say the design is on par with the Asian designs of sport stadiums (which is a very good thing .

Out of curiousity, how many cities in the U.S. have built soccer-specific stadiums? Seems like it'd be kinda rare.

A lot actually. Pretty much every MLS soccer team and maybe more for other leagues or schools.

There are 18 MLS teams, of those, the majority have their own stadiums. The exceptions are:

-New England
-Seattle

Both play in NFL stadiums owned by the team owners, so they pay no rent.

-DC, plays in RFK stadium, but is only tenant, they pay the city for rent.

-San Jose, has been planning their own stadiums forever, but still plays in a rented one.

And I think thats it? Houston is obviously getting their own, and Kansas has their own stadium opening this year. Chivas and LA share a soccer stadium.

my favorite part is the 'no public financing' thing.

Houston chased off enough tourists with our excessive hotel and rental car taxes used to build Enron.. errr.. Minute Maid and Reliant

I know there was talk of upgrading Robertson Stadium or even building a new one, so I would think Robertson could serve as a larger venue. However, 22,000 does seem small.
