2009: U2 coming to BC Place, Coldplay at GM Place

U2 and Coldplay announce Vancouver concert dates

Like melodramatic pop-rock ballads? Of course you do. Fortunately, two of the world’s most popular bands announced tours today, both with stops in Vancouver.

U2 will be performing songs from their 12th album, No Line On The Horizon, on October 28 at B.C. Place. According to the LiveNation press release, Bono and the boys will be backed by various acts, including Glasvegas, Elbow, Snow Patrol, and the Black Eyed Peas throughout their 360º Tour, which promises to provide an “unobstructed view for the audience” by means of architectural magic. Each venue will have at least 10,000 tickets up for grabs for around $30. Check back with the Straight for ticket sale information.

Coldplay will be performing at GM Place on June 20 for the Vancouver leg of their Viva La Vida Tour. The Grammy Award–winning quartet last played B.C. in July as headliners of the Pemberton Festival. Tickets go on sale Saturday [March 14] at 10 a.m, but Straight readers can nab them a day early with our exclusive pre sale by signing up for the “The List” eNewsletter before Thursday.

I'll be at the U2 concert... I just hope they don't play too much of their new stuff. Their vertigo concert was one of the best shows I have ever been to so I anticipate this one to be stellar too.

i'm with you on that, as long as they play more of the stuff upto and including All That You Can't Leave Behind, they'll kick ass.

i've seen U2 a few times now, they put on a live show that rivals the Rolling Stones for showmanship.

Coldplay on the other hand....meh. we're they just here?

I wouldn't go to any of these artists concerts, but at least it's something fun to happen in Vancouver...so good to hear. I really wish Ticketmaster would not be the only place to buy tickets though, as every ticket I've considered buying from them was at a ridiculous price.

They are all great performers. I just think Bono needs a good ego deflation. Somebody poke him with a large pin or something.

I have no doubt they are good performers, but U2 has become irrelevant, their last album bombed, and after Coldplay's Grammy performance I think it's universally accepted that they can't sing live.

I really liked Coldplay's last album, but I would never pay to see them live unless they promised to lip sync

U2's last album bombed? It went triple platinum in the US 4x platinum in the UK and 5x platinum in Canada? All in all it sold over 9 million copies, won 8 grammies and spawned the second highest grossing tour of all time, making upwards of 400 million dollars. Hardly a bomb.

Bono is a douche though... but I can look past that for all the good music they have made.

They are also one of the best bands live, even if you aren't a U2 fan it is tough not to be floored at one of their shows.

Or maybe he's talking about their newest album - the one that's now #1, and that Rolling Stone calls their best since Achtung Baby. They're probably not the band they once were, but they're far from irrelevant.

It's interesting that they're going back to BC Place for the Vancouver show. If memory serves correctly, they didn't sell out their last show there in 1997. I guess they're serious about making sure there are cheap(ish) tickets available. I remember not being blown away with the sound in the dome at PopMart, but the atmosphere and the spectacle were incredible. Elevation and Vertigo were both great shows.

Ticketmaster pretty much just sells the tickets at whatever price the market will bear. If it sold them for less than the market valued them at, someone else would just resell them. You should spend your time wishing the events you want to attend become less popular if you want to spend less.

They were in Vancouver a few years back, and they closed Pemberton last summer (but played second fiddle to Jay-Z and Tom Petty IMO).

I think you need to see the distinction between your OPINIONS and universally accepted realities. As I've already stated, I HAVE seen them live and Chris Martin is a good singer. But whatever, some people take a joy in being pissy.
