Telus to invest $500-million into B.C.'s broadband infrastructure

Telus to spend $500 million in B.C. in 2009

Vancouver SunMarch 17, 2009 8:02 AMComments

VANCOUVER – Telus announced plans Tuesday to invest $500 million focused primarily on advanced wireless and wireline broadband infrastructure in B.C.

Since 2000, TELUS has made more than $19 billion in capital and operating expenditures in the Province, according to a news release.

Telus’ capital spending plans include a world-class Internet data centre that will have the capacity to support both B.C. and Canadian clients. The facility, to be located in one of several B.C. communities currently under consideration, will be one of the “greenest” in North America and at least twice as energy efficient as existing data centres. It will be designed according to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria, according to the release.

The construction of Telus’ next generation wireless network is currently underway. Telus expects to launch the new network, based on the latest version of High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) technology, in B.C. and nationally by early 2010. This investment is expected to ensure a smooth transition to long term evolution (LTE) technology, the emerging worldwide standard for fourth generation or 4G wireless networks.

Telus’ broadband wireline investment plan will expand the reach of our high-speed Internet and digital Telus TV service in B.C. and Alberta. These investments build on the 2005 Connecting Communities partnership between Telus and the Province of British Columbia, which brought broadband access to 366 communities by the end of 2006.

The new flagship Internet data centre is scheduled to open in 2011.

Cool. One of the few major head offices still left in Vancouver. Nice to see they're investing in the region.

Can't wait until they start their HSPA network over here, then I could easily switch between Rogers/Telus/Bell using the same phone. Btw, any 3G GSM phone that supports 3G 850/1900 will work on the future network...this includes the iPhone 3G. Some people in Ontario are already able to pick up the new cell phone network in some areas.
