As much as I love the Varsity (once a month or so), I don't think I want to sit on a 4 hour flight next to someone who just ate there!

I guess I'm not a true Atlantan as I find the Varsity to be disgusting. It's one of the few places I simply can't eat at. Awful food in a dreary setting. But somehow it's an "institution".

Anyway, Blais said The Spence will open in April (former Globe space). I kinda doubt that.

Here's all that's left of the old Vickery's building on Crescent

I think they're keeping the gabled section and the whole west dining room area for the new concept: a seafood place called Lure (by the 5th Group)

^Also Lure has applied for a permit for amplified outdoor music on the patio. Will likely be approved, as others in the area (Flip Flops, Front Page, etc) have similar permits.

new retail at Apex in West Midtown?

Drove by Apex today (on Huff...includes apartments, corner tavern, helmet, etc...) and noticed that there is interior work going on in one of the unused retail units... some time ago it was reported that Java Lords was opening a coffee shop there...is this the case?

Great addition for that area. Can't believe it's taken so long.

Great news! I talked to the Dugan's people a number of times during the delayed finishing of the Aquarium. They really thought they could hold on... but didn't quite make it.

The Wrecking Bar Brew Pub turns 1!

Anybody remember how bad the building used to look?

Celebrating their one year anniversary this weekend. If you haven't been yet and you ever went when it was an architectural antique store..... you're in for a huge surprise. 22 of their beers are on draft (including lots of special casks). The building is on the end of my street and had been covered in graffiti for 5 years. Much better now! 292 Moreland Ave (just south of Little 5 Points)

I've had several great meals (and beers) there...great prices for the quality of the food. The patio is +/- but the granite rock walls are fantastic inside.

Not sure when it happened but the Arizona Pub in Kirkwood/Edgewood is closed. Not the greatest place but the skyline views from the second floor patio were awesome. RIP

In other news Krog Street Market has broken ground. My hood is exploding. Weeee

I wasn't able to make the NPU-E meeting last night, but a few notes from the agenda:
YUM BUNZ restaurant finally is in the licensing process. Wasn't this place announced almost a year ago? There's a couple of other new restaurants applying for a license: "Henry's Midtown" at 132 10th St, "1Kept" at 2293 Peachtree, and "Gio’s Chicken Amalfitano" at 1099 Hemphill.

Fig Jam Kitchen Restaurant moving to 77 12th Street

http://midtown.patch.com/articles/12...hen-restaurant

Quote:
The eatery will relocate from Brookwood Place and take 2,000 square feet in the 77 12th building, which will be a 23-story tower that will feature 330 high-end one- and two-bedroom apartments anchored by 20,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

The restaurant expects to open in the fall.

“We are excited about the new 12th & Midtown location because we feel our concept fits with the neighborhood, and the area is becoming very metropolitan with great diversity,” Costanzo Astarita, Fig Jam Kitchen & Bar partner, said in a statement.

Checked out Argosy in East Atlanta last night. Wow, they did an amazing job inside. This was the old A&P grocery on Flat Shoals then later a really crummy antique market. Non-smoking, if you can believe it in EAV

If you check it out, here's what the interior looked like after they demo'd the interior in January 2011 (yep, it took them two years!)

Who remembers the smokers' paradise that was the Green Derby up on Hammond in the Perimeter area? That whole block has been torn down as well as the one across Hammond from it. Wonder what's going in there?

Café Intermezzo Could Open Midtown Spot Monday

http://midtown.patch.com/articles/ca...wn-spot-monday

Quote:
The planned Café Intermezzo at Midtown's 12th & Peachtree project could open as early as Monday.

A spokeswoman for the popular dessert eatery would not confirm the opening date, but a handwritten note at the new spot projects a March 25 open.
