Ontario Appeal Court nixes brothel ban

Ontario’s top court has struck down the ban on brothels.

The court says the ban puts prostitutes in danger and they should be allowed to work safely indoors.

However, it has given the government one year to rewrite the law if it chooses to.

At the same time, the Appeal Court says concerns about the nuisance created by street prostitution is real.

So it has upheld the ban on soliciting for the purposes of selling sex.

When it comes to living on the avails of prostitution, the court says the law can be reworded to specifically exclude the exploitation of prostitutes.

Guess we'll see an explosion of brothels in Ontario.

Personally, I'd rather have them in brothels than where they are now. My neighbourhood is a commercial street in a largely residential area, and to avoid the police patrolling the main street, they've all gone into the residential areas, where there are families and the streets are darker and less patrolled by police. By giving them safer indoor places to operate, they'll be at less risk and families won't have to deal with the nuisance of prostitutes in their neighbourhoods.

On the other hand, there is potential for that aspect to be abused as well. We should have some form of regulations for this, and the current law ignores that.

I think its a good decision, the sex trade will exist with or without laws prohibiting it. Why not legalize it, regulate it, tax it, and then it'll be something that is more controllable. Its a seedy industry, but at least there will be rules and regulation instead of chaos.
