It's back...

Yes, it's the giant wooden deck in front of Friday Night Lights. I had the priviledge of walking by it along Richmond today, while being careful not to fall off the curb.

Could somebody explain to me how this is allowed? I am all for patios on the street. Don't get me wrong - we should be encouraging as much street activity as possible - sidewalk sales, outdoor patios, buskers, et c. But I really object to private entrepreneurs taking over public space for their own private benefit, to the exclusion of other users. Especially where public space is at such an obvious premium!

Does FKLs pay for this privilege? I desperately hope so. And I desperately hope this money gets re-invested in pedestrianization schemes. But I know that neither is, sadly, the reality.

I agree, it seems like the only busker we have is the bongo drum guy. I'd much rather have those instead of people coming up to you on your way into Stobie's. (I would love to have seen Mr. Farhi confront that beggar, he was on his property after all)

I hate that goddamn shitty patio.

I like the bongo drum guy, and I agree that he is one of very few London buskers. But for god's sake, let's make the bums a bit less visible at Richmong/Dundas. The ingredients are there for urban vitality and renaissance...just take out the bums, and people will come. And get rid of that shity patio at Friday Light Fights. Maybe get rid of the mayor and her drunk of a husband too.

This drives me nuts too, the last time I was squeezing past it a bus blew by and nearly knocked me down.

I honestly think increased street vendors is a good idea. Let people sell things other than hot dogs and souvlakis - let them sell tacos and burritos, freshly-squeezed juice, candy apples, fresh fruits and vegetables, coffee...

I wonder what happened to saints-go-marching-in trumpet guy... haven't seen him in a while. Bongo guy is ok, but he's got nothing on that old dude.

As for the bums...it seems like they prefer to loiter at the unoccupied store fronts. Maybe we just need to fill in some more of those gaps. I personally use the generally bum-free Clarence St (rather than passing bum-central Richmond+Dundas) to get to Stobies for a slice at lunch, so they don't bother me too much. But even so, our bums aren't terribly aggressive...pretty tame as far as bums go.

^yes, certainly when compared to say, Montreal (aggressively bad) and Vancouver (junky central)

Another April, and another return of the FKL patio. Saw it being constructed on Monday, and by today it was finished.

This time around it is slightly smaller. Ever so slightly.
