A little bit of update news:

1. I drove past the Eastside apartments by the Emmigration Court apartments yesterday after work. It looks like a massive hole is starting to be dug for their underground parking.

2. I spoke with a member on the city council the other day. He says we should start seeing some demolition and site clearing for the State Street Plaza (midblock state street 250ish south state) in the next 2 months.

3. Kirton & McKonkie law firm will move its offices out of the Eagle Gate Tower, and into CCC building 4, next door on South Temple.

4. I spoke with a family member this past week who is involved with CCRI and PRI. He is working on some TI in the Eagle Gate Tower. The tentative plan is for Ustar, GOED, and WTC utah to move into Eagle Gate. The tower entry plaza will be modified. A large globe statue of the World will be placed in the plaza, and the Eagle Gate tower will be renamed WTC Utah.

I read that as there is no current plans for a new building for the WTC Utah.

I like the idea of putting the WTC Utah at the Eagle Gate Tower. The Globe sculpture will be a nice touch too. It's sounding as if the commercial vacancy rate downtown is at a pretty healthy low.

Not low enough for them to built their own tower. Sure the globe sculpture sounds cool and all. But I much rather see a new highrise out of this and not for them to be cheap and move into a building we already have.

Well that rules out of there being a new WTC Utah Tower in our near future. Damn it.
God I swear sometimes we're so cheap here in Utah. Other major cities would built their own WTC towers, but not us, we just have companies try to condense as much as they can into older buildings. That's why our skyline is pathetic sometimes.

Don't get me wrong our skyline is alot better now with the The Promontory and 222 South Main. But we are still light years away from where I would like to see SLC's skyline to be. Just tried of seeing plans for future skyscrapers full though.

Great news, Viperlord, thanks for that update. I really love the State Street proposal and have been excited about that one getting going.

As for the WTC Utah moving into the Eagle Gate Tower, I think it's a good thing, and I do not think it spells the end of a new building for them. The WTC UT organization moving into a space that they can call their own is a step in that direction, I think. 222 is filling up, as is the new office spaces associated with City Creek, and as was pointed out, office space downtown is once again at a healthy low. The WTC taking over Eagle Gate shows that it has grown, and this will really raise its profile as a lot of people don't even know it exists. As I've pointed out before, it's all about synergy.
The WTC will outgrow Eagle Gate Tower at some point, and when that day comes, they'll be ready to build a new tower.

Will the existing buildings be re-used at all or will these be new buildings? The two buildings on the right look almost identical to the existing ones there. It also looks as if they'd be demolishing the "Salt Lake Blue" building and Children's Theater.

Eagle Gate Tower is about 20 floors? I believe that's about the size they were wanting to build a new building for the WTC Utah. So we should be able to expect a 30+ tower built once they do outgrow the current location.

errr... There are several other things in Eagle Gate Tower besides what will be the WTC. There are several law firms and other professional firms....so WTC will only have a couple of floors at best to start out.

Sounds like we are still decades away from WTC Utah having their own tower.

Yeah, I know WTC won't have all of Eagle Gate unto themselves, but even if/when they were to build their own building, it would have space to lease to other businesses. I think "outgrowing" a space takes into account a lot more than just capacity. It includes profile, success, and future investment.

On a related note, anyone hear of anything with the Deseret News building? Is it completely empty now or are there still tenants there? I would think with CCC coming online soon, it would be coveted office space.

There is a great summary of the project on the Utah Urban Forum (http://www.utahurbanforum.com/state-...state-t59.html). It has the current plans and other ones that were submitted (which I don't like nearly as much as the current plan). I am really excited for the plans, especially the restoration of the Rex Theatre. So yes, you are right about the two buildings on the right that are going to be restored. The "Salt Lake Blue" building and Children's Theater buildings are going to be demolished and replaced with the building on the right. Also the restored Rex Theatre may be used by the Salt Lake Film Center or as the Children's Theatre again.

I think that you are refering to the Cramer House which is on Floral Street. The Cramer house is going to be restored (which will be great cause it is a dump right now) and either turned into a restaurant or an office (at least thats what the plans says on the Urban Forum). Also the entrance to the building on the left will be open and connect with Floral Street so that the Cramer House can be easily accessed.

Hopefully the whole thing will turn out great because it has got a lot of potential.

The Children's Theater won't be returning to the Rex. They've been bounced around downtown Salt Lake for a long time and have had enough. They're moving to the Avalon in Murray, which is cool for the Avalon, but a little sad for Salt Lake. So I don't know that the Rex Theater has a prospective tenant yet.

State Street Plaza
I am excited for the Rex Theater Restoration, but I am so disappointed in the new midrise. It's an absolutely terrible design. The base proportions are bad. The fake historicism is what is most terrible about it. Have we not learned from 222 Main?! How putting something contemporary next to those small histroic buildings can actually turn out quite well!!! This would never happen in Portland or Seattle.

If done right, something with a historical design, with modern touches turns out fantastic. I absolutely love the Zions Bank building at the corner of St. George Blvd. and Main St. in St. George.

It was built in the mid '90's; reflective of a historical style yet has the modern glass look at the entrances.
