thanks for compiling this, but it's sort of misleading to suggest that reasonably comprehensive metro system that serves montreal's core is in any significant way comparable to the rail component of the vancouver regional transit network.

sigh... in other towns, especially in the u.s., towns draft plans then get the government to ante up. but the city of vancouver is too small and too constrained by the few revenue generation tools afforded it to build anything on its own, so the province/regional transportation authority is/are basically responsible for rapid transit. but that leads to perverse outcomes, like burnaby having more kms of rail track than vancouver, the evergreen line being built before the ubc line, a streetcar system that'll likely never happen.

montreal is drawing up plans for a street car system and a couple more metro stops in the east, and the province has no say about it, or even any real funding onus. meanwhile, vancouver's streetcar plan was effectively pre-vetoed by the organization of regional transportation.

was that a rant? i think so. i've got to get outside.

Lenght of track and number of stations isn't everything. You can have 100 kilometers of trackage and a station every 1500 meters, but it you have 4 car, 500 pers capacity trains running only one every 15 minutes you aren't going to have alot of people moving throughout the day.

After spending last weekend back down in NYC, I've decided I quite perfer the short and frequent skytrains to the 10 minute headway for the long-assed C line subway on a saturday afternoon in Manhatten. This hasn't been my only NYC trip that I noticed this, but it is the most recent.

Its just that... the cars will be a lot more empty compared to now

I would rather see a comparison of the entire transit system, including buses, etc. That would be a more complete picture of a city's success in terms of getting people out of their cars.

For example, the annual ridership for the entire transit system in 2008:

This is linked trip (boarded passengers), while all the others are unlinked trip (revenue passengers). The actual number for Vancouver is about 179 million.

No. Adding Commerical Drive will push the number up to 84,000.

Anyways, while looking up that info, I found the following quote to be quite interesting:
