The Church of the Company fire in Santiago, Chile killed between 2000-3000 people, mostly women attending a religious mass. The ceiling veils caught fire and spread to the roof, the side doors had been closed and only opened inward, leaving the main entrance to be blocked by bodies - with the hooped skirts in fashion at the time causing serious obstruction.
ON June 6th 1941, 4000 people were crushed and suffocated in a mass confusion and panic at the WHO Air Raid Shelter in Chongqing, China. The city having suffered horrific air raids sounded the all clear after one run, then as the people were leaving, the danger siren went off again causing the crowds to return into the shelter as thousands were trying to get out.
