Either way this is great news for the future of commercial growth in the city.
If I'm not mistaken Black Rock was still interested in moving to Philly. I could have sworn I read an article about it a couple of years ago.

Since we are getting closer for those who are interested Philly Tech Week 2012 starts April 20th with Philly Start Up Weekend and then continues on through to the 28th. Here is a link to their website http://www.phillytechweek.com/

There are lots of cool events that are part of Philly Tech Week.

I am signed up for Philly Startup Weekend so if anybody elses decides to go I will be there.

The other event that I am pretty excited about is Switch Philly which is

"Five Philly startups will demo in front of judges and attendees to determine the winner of a prize pack that includes free office space and meetings with local investors. Judges: Mayor Michael Nutter, Josh Kopelman, Ellen Weber. Location: Levitt Auditorium"

For those interested the Philly Tech scene http://technicallyphilly.com/ has a ton of info and is worth checking out.

About time! This is a huge hole in the continuation of Urbanity from Center City through to University City... now all we need is some of those holes and Parking Lots filled around 30th Street Station and for Cira South to get a move on

Great news! So happy to see we are growing...!! BTW, the article says that is a 0.7% or 10k gain in one year. It is possible we have a larger population grow since then.

Our growth prediction from the census is actually over 1% for Philadelphia, and there is truly no "accurate" predictions, we could be more, we could be... less (I'll bet money we don't shrink.)

Also, census stops in Mid 2009, so that leaves out half of the year in which Philly really stepped it up! I expect the growth rates to be more towards 3%, we have to wait and see, right guys!

No doubt population is a good thing. However, I'd like to see who is moving in to the city. Are they contributing to the tax base or taking away from it? That is the real question.

I would say the people moving into the city are probably contributing to the tax base. I know a couple people that moved into the city over the past year and they all have decent jobs. As for all the kids they can be a drain on the tax base but that would depend on the parents.

Most people moving into the city are young professionals - around the adjacent neighborhoods of center city. This has been happening for a while now. The difference is, the ones who moved here a few years ago haven't moved out like was the case in the past. Better buy in Southwark/Bella Vista while you can!

There are also alot of immigrants moving to the city and in my experience these are people who will work themselves to the bone to make a better life.

Philadelphia Business Journal

The ground breaking for a $60 million hotel at 12th and Arch streets in Philadelphia is scheduled for April 17.

Home2 Suites by Hilton, with 246 guest rooms, will sit across the street from the Pennsylvania Convention Center . Wurzak Hotel Group and Parkway Corp., which runs 75 parking facilities in the United States and Canada, will develop the project. The plan also calls for a 860-space parking garage.

When I was a student at Penn, we use to play football and ultimate frisbee on Hill Field. It would have been nice to keep some grass in that area of U-City.

In my gut, I think this will still happen in the future. The founder and CEO of BlackRock, I believe his name is Steven Schwartzman, is a Philly guy. He graduated from Abington High School. He went to the University of Texas. Something about him tells me that he eschews the glitzy facade of the Wall Street/Ivy League crowd. There is a certain sensibility to him, at a very minimum, given his history in the public education system. Given that, Philadelphia would be a good fit.

He also happens to be one of the richest people in the world.

While I think immigrants have contributed to Philadelphia's overall population growth over the past decade, I don't believe they've driven the the city's recent uptick. Immigration from Latin America has been extremely low during the last few years because of the recession. Furthermore, restaurant, hospitality and construction related jobs have not been readily abundant since 2007.

If anything, the recent uptick is more likely attributed to the rise of young professionals who are choosing to stay in Philadelphia after graduation.

The new Penn Park is perfect for that

There is also a ton of grass by the Beige Block... also I believe the buildings will just meet the street at Hill Field and keep the field somewhat still open

Well that is great to know. I swore I read an article at some point that said Blackrock was still interested in the move to Philly and after the economic crisis settles down they want to make it happen....now I can't find the article anywhere.
