Just got back.
Wow.
This place is very impressive, and very crowded today. The musicians and tree-people are kinda cool. I hope that a musician or two are a permanent fixture around that place. The fountains and creek are beautiful and everything is just as grand and impressive as we've all expected from photos.
My knee-jerk reaction thought was "I was wrong. The Gateway is dead."
But then I thought about it, and realized that I myself will still be spending more of my time and money at the Gateway. CCC is fantastic, and it's presence downtown is going to be incredible, but aside from visits to some of the eateries, and Harmons, I don't see myself spending a whole lot of time there (unless I can get one of those condos!... Holding out for the Cascade...) The truth is that it's just a shopping center. I'm not trying to take anything away from it-- it's great-- but unless I'm looking to spend 80 bucks on a shirt, I won't have much reason to go there, except maybe to take in the atmosphere.
On the other hand, I'll be going to the Gateway for movies or the Planetarium or before Jazz games just as frequently as I did before. I'm sure when I go to the premiere of the Hunger Games tonight, the crowds will have all shifted over the Gateway.
I do think the Gateway would be very wise to update their look a little a bit. It would be great if these two shopping centers could co-exist as almost a single destination, along with Main Street to create a reputation for downtown again being a shopping and lifestyle destination.
The skybridge was certainly successful at keeping people in the shopping center. Not too many strayed down main. Of course, CCC is the attraction of the day, so I assume it's just that. I'm sure all of downtown, and Main St. especially will benefit from CCC. Speaking of which, the awesome new barber shop on main was offering free straight-razor shaves. It was fantastic. That place is great. Check it out.
Lots of people taking pictures. And yet no one escorted off the premises or arrested. Odd.
All in all, so surreal after all this time to be there, standing in the renderings we've been following for years. Standing in T-Mac's photos. It's sure a stunning place. I look forward to seeing how it will now impact the city.
