That last photo makes me understand for the first time how Lone Mountain got its name. It never has seemed to me much of a mountain (it's pretty much the site of the University of San Francisco, a private Jesuit college, now) nor particularly "alone". But you can see what the folks who named it were seeing in the photo.

FYI: that statue photo was taken down at Stanford. While more rare, there are photos from all over the area showing the effects of that quake. I recall one of a fence up my way that shifted several feet that day. Of course the SF pix are most dramatic, but the damage was visible for miles around.

Wow! During the six years I lived in the City, I don't think I heard thunder or saw lightning more than four or five times. When I lived on Russian Hill, I had a great view of the north bay and used to see thunderstorms over Napa, but almost never in the City itself.
