Bass Pro’s Pyramid Plans Shaken by Seismic Concerns
Memphis Daily News

"If the seismic studies add to the cost of a retrofit, it’s a cost the city of Memphis would have to pay. Lipscomb said the city would have to decide then if it wants to continue with a renovation of The Pyramid or possibly demolish the building and Bass Pro Shops consider it as one of several Downtown sites to build an all-new structure."

"Meanwhile, the administration’s plan has picked up some new elements including talks with owners of the Memphis Marriott hotel at the Memphis Cook Convention Center to expand. The hotel added another 200-room, 14-story tower in 2004."

Repairs under way to restart the Madison Avenue trolley in Memphis
The Commercial Appeal

"Repairs began this week on the two-mile line from Main to Watkins, and Memphis Area Transit Authority officials say trolleys could roll down Madison again by March. It was MLGW's concern about leakage of low-voltage electrical current from the trolley tracks into utility lines that prompted MATA to suspend the trolley service on Madison on Sept. 13. The leakage, known as stray current, can cause pipes, cables and other metal materials to corrode rapidly. It's a familiar issue for operators of light-rail transit systems around the country and has been blamed for as much as $500 billion a year in damage."

Contractors with Webb Building Corp. work on a helical ramp, part of the Beale Street Landing project, as progress continues Monday on the riverfront development. The basic components of the landing -- including a floating boat dock with the helical ramp and a grass-covered building for ticketing, retail and restaurant operations -- should be finished late this year. Walkways and parking lots are planned to be completed in time to reopen that section of the park for Memphis in May. Planning and construction on the $35 million Beale Street Landing facility has been under way since 2002 but still faces funding issues, including a signature terraced park that remains unfunded.

Former motorsports park to reopen as Memphis International Raceway
The Commercial Appeal

"In a release from Moroso Investment Partners, the group that recently purchased the facility, president and CEO Jason Rittenberry said the group wanted a name to signify a fresh, new direction for the track. “We wanted to re-brand the facility more closely with our current Palm Beach International Raceway property,” Rittenberry said. "The Memphis Motorsports Park was a Dover Motorsports brand, and we wanted our own identity."

Towering vision: Project would remake Sears Crosstown into Memphis arts village
The Commercial Appeal

"A coalition in art and real estate has quietly been laying the groundwork for more than a year to turn the Sears Crosstown building into an arts-centric urban village. The still-fluid plan is to establish an artists' residency program, studios, exhibition and performance space in parts of the 1.4 million-square-foot building at Watkins and North Parkway. The rough estimate to renovate is $200 million."
