Check the GiraSole thread a page or two back, it is said it could end up in the 1500' (457m) range rather than the current 1060 (323m) feet it is (was)

There has been speculation that the GiraSole has been made taller, but it is unconfirmed. Still, a design change would make sense given the original proposal is almost five years old.

^ There's no real speculation that height has changed, but it's for that thread.

Imagining New York’s Skyline With a New 1,400-Foot Tower.

June 6, 2012
By Eliot Brown and Craig Karmin

Quote:
Not all skyscrapers are equal — at least when it comes to their effect on the skyline.

A nearly 1,400-foot building planned to rise at Park Avenue and 56th Street in Manhattan appears as though it would occupy a distinct place on the New York City skyline,
as can be seen in renderings of the Rafael Viñoly-designed tower that were provided to potential investors in the building. Set apart from the fray of central Midtown,
the condo tower, called 432 Park Ave., would be surrounded by relatively lower buildings on Park Avenue.

I'm glad they have the arrows so I can tell which building it is.

hehe... I was going to say the same thing.

Actually, these renders look pretty nice... It looks bulkier, maybe because of the corner view. I think this will turn out well; height aside...

Hmm, anyone else think it looks a little like a middle finger sticking out of midtown? I would never advocate the reduction of height of anything, but this is just much taller than all the buildings around it and the box shape accentuates that even more, because it's not tapered and it's thin, so the awkwardly sticking out factor is maximized. It would be much better somewhere where it's more alone, like on the river, or anywhere that's not midtown really, or where buildings around it build up to its height, like stairs. Right now it looks kind of awkward. But hey, having a supertall is always better than not having a superall I guess.

What bothers me about this tower is that its just a stack of floors, it makes no attempt to attain elegance through edifice or even tries to gain merit through unique presentation. It even lacks any sort of crown, hopefully it will undergo some minor redesign before completed.

I think the building may have a few more tricks up its sleeve.

So, does everyone on SSP want to chip in individual funds to rent out the top floor. And each of us can spend like a week there, and then switch.

It will stand alone only for a short time. Other towers such as 225 West 57th Street, Tower Verre, One57 and the Park Avenue Towers will soon rise in proximity to 432 PA, so that awkward effect of being too tall will be reduced.

I am surprised that some people don't like this design.
Personally, this is actually a favorite of mine and I am thrilled to know it will claim the skies of Manhattan.

432 Park Avenue will enhance the skyline and hopefully be landmarked soon!

One thing I DO like about it is the fact that it's not hiding behind a solid wall of blue glass (or black or any other color). The windows are clearly delineated from the frame, which adds even more to the appearance of its height. The windows give it a sense of scale unto itself, just like art deco buildings and anything before Seagrams in 1958 and all the glass boxes that followed.

I wonder how much they pay for a design like this. I mean, it seems so simple, its just a big rectangular prism, unless im missing something. And then the facade looks like simple squares, with a floating look similar to the original wtc which is my favorite part of the design. And i know there's more to architectural design than just drawing boxes even when the design looks simple.

There are several elements of this design that I'd like to point out:
  1. Each side of the building looks exactly the same -- meaning that you get the same amazing awe-inspiring look
  2. The view from Central Park makes the building scream, I am Tall !!
  3. The view from the observation deck atop the Empire State Building shows exactly where Central Park begins
  4. The view from Trump Tower says, Hello Neighbor !!
  5. The view from the observation deck atop Rockefeller Center says, Here I am !!

I don't get the hype over this thing.
The height is impressive, the size of the site is impressive, the design: wut?

I don't understand.

It doesn't take a skyscrapergeek or architecturebuff to realize upon first glance that this isn't a 21st century proposal. what adds to the fire is that this thing will DOMINATE midtown, and will be seen from everywhere basically unobstructed,

maybe if this thing wasn't as tall would the design be more acceptable. or if it was clad in a more contemporary material (ex. curtainwall).. those little square cutouts with no form of variation whatsoever is pathetic.

I just don't get it. something that will take the Empire State's title as King of Midtown has to be

this proposal looks like a canceled/never build/fantasy project, not something that is already breaking ground. a building like Tower Verre would be much more appropriate/acceptable/iconic for such a presence on the skyline

When i first saw the design, i thought it was just an early massing render/rough design... but then i see these coloured renders in newspaper articles...

sorry for ranting, but i just don't believe this is going forward...
