Smile NEW YORK | New York Coliseum Tower | 1,535 FT / 468 M | 135 FLOORS | NEVER BUILT

I found this picture of a model of a proposal to redevelop the New York Coliseum, before the Time-Warner Center was eventually built. I can't find any other information on it though, such as the height or the floor count.

It looks like it would have been a handsome tower if it were built.

Looks like Tower Verre from the imagination of Helmut Jahn.

Just from what I remember off the top of my head, 1,535 ft and 135 stories. It was proposed around the same time Donald Trump was proposing his 150-story 1,670 ft Television City tower. I also seem to recall a second version of this tower being proposed for Phoenix. There were a few other proposals for the Coliseum site.

This tower instead of the TWC would have been sweet. I kinda like the TWC, but this one would have been a great corner piece for the Park.

btw - I'd love a plugin for Google Earth called "unbuilt NYC" which would add all these unbuilt towers (of course, you'd be able to pick which ones you want).

I like that design also, it would have added a great focal point to that area of the Manhattan skyliine. The TWC is nice, but "safe" 700 footers that don't challenge the skyline enough, even if a lot taller than anything that was there before.

I did some more digging.

From the August 1991 issue of Modern Steel Construction:
Quote:
Rocketing to New Heights

ABSTRACT: Architect Eli Attia's proposal for the old Coliseum site in New York City would have produced the world's tallest building. Attia's plan was for a 137-story, mixed-use tower. The design was intended to reflect the significance of the site. The tower is composed of two major elements: an 85 feet-high arcaded granite base that covers the full site and a decagonal tower of polychrome glass that steps back to rise to a height of 1,600 feet. This article describes the architectural design along with the tapered steel structure consisting of a three-dimensional steel truss system. Vertical and horizontal forces, especially wind stresses are resolved in diagonal peripheral members.
(1991). "Rocketing to new heights". Modern steel construction (0026-8445), 31 (8), p. 19.

Hunting down the actual article is proving to be hard.

Finally got a hold of the article.
Turns out it's about one of the other proposals for Columbus Circle.

Bummer.

I don't remember the exact magazine I saw the article in, but it was late 80's, and there was a similar design being discussed for Phoenix.

That's what I thought the minute I saw it, our very own Bank of China tower, and given that's one of my favorite towers in the world, I'd like to see a dozen of them elsewhere in the world!

Ah, the triangular architecture!
