Then get yourself a big Hess truck.

I used to like Times Square a lot - it wouldn't be so bad now if it weren't for the tourists.

yeah, but other than the intersection itself (or...what's left of it), every other block nearby, IMO, doesn't really need all that signage.

Yep, Yonge and Dundas has always been a brightly lit flashy district. I hope they bring back the iconic spinning discs from Sam The Record Man once Ryerson U redevelops the property Sam's used to occupy.

Whoever told mthq that Yonge Street was entirely built up recently with large, flashy, colourful lights and signs is a moron and a liar. And the buildings there range from the last 100+ years. They are not "from the same time period with the same architecture and whatnot". That's another lie someone told him.

He needs to stop listening to what others tell him, and do some research for himself so he's not just spreading their lies.

State St near Randolph has significantly lit up in Chicago, but it's not advertisements beyond the title of the buildings and news stations, and giant tv's.

Besides that street in Vancouver where else has there been a revival in neon? Its heyday was from the 1930's-60. In many places such as San Francisco's midmarket district it was removed completely. There was a ballot measure to bring back the sign district(not sure if it was neon or just billboards and led screens). In Time Square in New York and Piccadilly Cricus in London they replaced almost all the neon with the screens.

SAN FRANCISCO — Can neon save a neighborhood?

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/03/us/03billboard.html

"Mr. Addington, who owns two of the 52 buildings on that strip, known as Mid-Market, including the Warfield Theater, says he came up with the idea while looking at old photos of the area, which effectively connects the shopping friendly Union Square district with the area surrounding City Hall.

“When you begin to look at historic pictures and look at what it is now, what you notice is the lack of signage,” Mr. Addington said."

I don't think Pittsburgh has any left. I know when downtown retail and entertainment was in its heyday they had the Warner Theater on Fifth Avenue (sign is still there). Now, I think it's pretty much confined to Station Square. Oh, I guess the Cultural District might have some... I wonder if South Street on Philly would be considered as so.

Niagara Falls has Clifton Hill I know. I was on the NY side in 2004 and I could see the neon glaring from across the border into my hotel room...

Err....I guess South Street could count. We'll see what Market East becomes after this zoning change.
