In Time Square in New York and Piccadilly Cricus in London they replaced almost all the neon with the screens.
Anyone know of other examples?

While Dundas Square is an attempt in Toronto to create it's own Piccadilly Circus or Times Square the corners of Yonge and Dundas have always been home to bright neon lights and advertisement. It's located in the heart of the cities shopping commercial district around 1880 electricty started to run through the city and some of the first uses for it were store fronts and signs along Yonge.

Anyway with that being said the new Square created by demolishing a few run down buildings has created a space people love to congregate in summer and even winter.

Here is a flash party that happened a few days after MJ's death.

To compare it to that Ritz thing is a huge stretch. It's right in the core, on a streetcar line and subway line and sees 24/7 pedestrian traffic. It's also along the street that for over a century now has been home to impromptu celebrations for the city. When ever there is something to celebrate this is where people were drawn to even before the media towers went up.

Ryerson sadly does not want to foot the bill. They have been dragging thier feet and did not incoporate it into the new buildigns design as promised, then they promised they would put it somewhere visable on campus but biffed that move also. Its all comming down to money. The thing is that I wish management was more transparent about it, I don't know if students would support paying for the sign restoration since many students have no memory of it (neither do I but I do remember it from old rap videos and shots from Toronto as a child) but if they were told of the significance and history of the sign I am sure they would support the $5-10 bucks it would cost to add to tuition.

Ryerson is saying the sign will costs at least $250-375K to refurbish.

I my mind it would probably be cheaper to re-create the sign with modern LEDs and give it the re-make treatment like the Coke logo at Times Square or Sanyo/TDK/Coke logos at Piccadilly.

^ In this Ghetto Concept video which is from 1997 you can catch a glimpse of the SAMS sign and the old Yonge stretch with some of its neons still in action. There are plans to bring back this neon and light action up to Gerrad Street I think studies are concluding on it right now.

What I would like to see for certain cities.

New York: Turn the Flatiron district into a neon district.

LA: Broadway Downtown.

SF. Mid Market and Geary and O'fearel west on Union Square.

For New York I think the new Hudson Yards development would be better for a new neon district. They're already going to have a plaza and whatnot. They would just have to ensure there will be enough late-night restaurants and whatnot that people will be there anyways, otherwise it would be a waste.

The Hundson Yard project is brand new. Neon looks cooler among older buildings. The Gran Via in Madrid is what gave me the idea for the Flatiron district in New York. Also for LA Koreatown and more in Hollywood.

The Evening Standard saying that plans have been submitted for approval to Westminster council to turn Walkers Court in Soho into offices. People can say it's sleazy and seedy - but doesn't this just further sanitise another area of London?

Love it or loathe it, this is part of the character of Soho. I'm quite happy with a number of the changes in Soho over the years. The area used to be rife with drug dealers and prostitutes and wasn't all that safe until the 90's. On the whole, Soho strikes a good balance now between being edgy, bohemian and a place with good clubs, bars and restaurants. But Walkers Court is probably the last remnant of the old Soho. It is hardly dangerous anymore and just adds a slightly risque vibe to the area.

I can't actually find the article online, but if anyone comes across more info on these plans then post in here.

Walkers Court looks cool. A city has to have all things even the sleezy.

But is it the city thats forcing these businesses to remove their neon signage, or are the businesses willfully doing it themselves (whether through renovation or closure)?

Its both. Businesses and gentrification as well as the Westminster Council which is opposed to new neon signs and refuses to preserve the older ones such as the Art Deco Regent Palace Sign from the 1930's. In America that would be considered historic but I guess thats modern by UK standards.
