^No idea. Nothing's been posted yet as far as I can tell.

Science Building

It is a good thing that the old science building is being renovated. This article explains why the science building was, or still is, on the verge of collapsing.

http://themet.metrostudentmedia.com/...ten-situation/

And just think, there were some people who were opposed to the renovation, and building of the new science building.

^CCD may suck at putting out any news, but according to CCD student government's Facebook page the referendum passed 76% to 24%.

So, the new CCD building is a go.

Good news. You can now get drunk and support Auraria at the same time. The Breckenridge Brewery is now brewing Lucky U IPA, a beer the old Tivoli Brewery used to make. Inorder for BB to use the Tivoli name and logo, BB will pay the Tivoli Preservation Foundation 5% of the profits made.

I remember hearing of graduate programs being offered at Metro State sometime soon, does anyone know something about this? I'm a Metro/UCD alum and I definitely would be interested in checking into a grad program.

It looks like Metro will begin offering Masters Degrees in Accounting and Teaching in Fall 2010, and a Masters in Social Work in Fall 2011. Other than those three Masters programs, no others are being proposed till 2012. I imagine the sucess of these programs will determine if Metro is going to offer higher degrees in anything else.

^That's correct. From what I've heard, there's a number of departments that want to offer Master's Programs in 2012 and are busy working on proposals.

But, Metro wants to get permission from the Higher Learning Commission to offer master's programs without having to receive the Commissions approval for each one before implementing anymore programs. So, it could be a little later than 2012 before any other programs appear.

Metro Brand/Name Change

Speaking of Metro offering Masters degrees, shouldn't Metro have University status?

A couple of months ago the Metropolitan ran an article discussing the possibility of a name/brand change, and two weeks ago I filled out a survey regarding Metro's brand. I know some people are against it but I really hope Metro changes their name. Just from traveling and living in different parts of the country, Metro is a common name for community colleges, technical schools, for profit schools, and other lower tiered institutions. Here are a few names that I suggested: Denver State University (DSU), University of Auraria (AU not UA), and Auraria State University (ASU).

That'd be hilarious... I currently go to Metro... my high school was UA (I realize you're going for AU) and I went to ASU (The one in AZ) after I'd graduated from high school...

As juvenile as it seems, every time I hear or see UA, I think of Urinary Analysis. I know, stupid, but I can’t help it.

It could be AU, and in fact my guess is that it would if "Auraria" were in its name. University of Colorado should technically be UC but everyone calls it CU.

I like that idea a lot!

I kinda like "City University of Denver" after CUNY in New York, though perhaps "State University of Denver" would be a more accurate term (since I think CUNY is owned by the city of New York and Metro is owned by Colorado). In any case, it offers the possibility of having multiple campuses in the future, and I think that MSCD and CUNY have very similar missions.

The only problem is, both other schools on campus have the word "Denver" in their name and it gets overwhelming.

That said, an article in the Metropolitan probably doesn't really carry a whole lot of clout. If a name change is really a good idea it's going to require a widespread push. I hope, if they end up doing it, they re-issue diplomas to former graduates (or at least offer the opportunity for graduates to pay to have that done) so that you don't have a piece of paper for something that doesn't exist anymore.

I like the "city university" name, but the acronym would be CUD. That's what a cow chews, plus it's too close to UCD.

No one outside of Denver knows the word Auraria, so if they named it anything like Auraria State, people would be forever answering the question, "where the hell is that?"

How about Mile High University? Everyone knows we're the Mile High City so people from out of town should get it pretty quickly (if not, they're idiots). It's catchy, no other school has a name anything like it, and MHU rolls off the tongue nicely.

It's settled! Mile High University!!

Sorry, but CUD is too funny to pass up, I vote for City University of Denver.

What about Central University of Colorado (CUC)?

^So far every single alternative name I have seen frankly sucks. Anything with Auraria in it makes less sense as the name is really obscure. Anything with Colorado is also a turn-off as I don't think it represents the urban nature of the school. Plus, what has the state done for any college except repeatedly f**k them over in the past twenty years?

I've always been fond of Metropolitan State University of Denver, but as there is already a Metro University in Minneapolis, there's a conflict. Denver State University, maybe?

Or, just maybe, keep the name of a rather successful school that is the third largest in CO and has nearly 100K alumni. Schools seem to change their name either if they have gone from a college to university status or they are a failing institution in need of a rebranding, i.e. University of Southern Colorado.

"Mile High University" just makes me think of an online tech school. That said, it might end up attracting bigger crowds on 4:20 than Boulder

Well, since Metro is going to offer graduate degrees they will have University status. Should they put university in their name, they would sound a lot like Metropolitan University in Minnesota. I like Denver State University, it kind of reminds me of Portland State University.

Wong, you completely ignored my brilliant Mile High University suggestion. I'm hurt.

I do like Denver State University, but I suspect DU would be opposed.
