Cumberland CID new gateway statues

Have you seen the new gateway statues going up in Cumberland within the new streetscapes? They are of two variants: On the Cobb Parkway exit of 285S, there's a giant silver logo 3d statue being built that looks like the round logo on the image below. Then there are 22 foot high statues being built in various places such as on Cumberland Blvd off the exit on I-75N right before the AMC, made of brick and topped with a smaller round silver logo - a smaller version of the one off the Cobb Parkway exit of 285S. Nothing like these gateways anywhere else in metro Atlanta and very little even in the entire country. Does anyone have any photos?

A lot of the more prominent suburbs of Chicago have things like these.

Perimeter CID has special street signs they hang from the mast arms at signalized intersections. That to me is the marker of that district.

Smyrna and Vinings have those as well, though usually on new street signs and signs for new neighborhoods... Though some of the signs on major streets in Smyrna have already been replaced. Then there are "older" housing neighborhoods in Smyrna like mine (built 10 years ago) whos' associations paid the cost of installing them on small antique-looking rod-iron posts.

Not really sure. The general area of the I-75/I-285 intersection has been called Cumberland for about 30 years, well before I came here.

Well, the Cumberland is a big part of what Sherman used to come down here and tear up the ATL. Also there is a island off the coast called that. So it could be named for either one although I would guess Sherman since he was right through there. John Bell Hood jumped on him but our boys couldn't hold against that many of them.

Yeah, I always assumed the Army of Cumberland was the inspiration behind the area's name, since they fought so many battles in the Cobb County area.

I think the area around Cumberland Mall gradually became known as "Cumberland" in reference to the mall, much as it is sometimes called "Cumberland/Galleria" in reference to both shopping areas. Cumberland Mall opened in 1973, so that would fit the 30 year (or so) timetable.

"Cumberland" may be a reference to the Cumberland Mountains - part of the Southern Appalachians...or possibly the Cumberland River, both in nearby Tennessee. These were named for the Duke of Cumberland in the 1700s, and there may be areas in North Georgia named for him as well.

Origins of Cumberland Mall's name

There is a lake in an older neighborhood near Cumberalnd Mall which is called Cumberland Lake and the street whose houses back up to the lake is called Cumberland Dr. This neighborhood predates Cumberland Mall which opened in 1973. Most of the homes in this neighborhood were built before 1973, so it make sense that the lake was the origin for the name as there is no other reference to Cumberland to be found in the area.

In case you are interested, Cumberland Lake (and Cumberland Dr.) are located off of Spring Hill Parkway - To get there from the Paces Ferry Exit off of 285, go west and turn righ onto Spring Hill Pkwy (right after Panera Bread), then turn left on to Spring hill Rd. and make an immediate right on to Valley Vista Rd. and Cumberland Lake will be located behind the homes you see on the right. Valley Vista then intersects Cumberland Dr. and if you take a right, the homes on your right also have their lots adjacent to the lake.

Cumberland Lake has been a hidden treasure for years and it was in the 1990's that a couple of lake front lots had new "mansions" built on them. Most of the homes with lakefront lots are still 1960's or 1970's vintage. This neighborhood is quite interesting as in the last five years there have been many homes halled off and new $700,000 homes built. It offers large forested lots with quick access to all that Atlanta offers and for the parents of private school kids -it is only 4miles away from the schools. It is located in unincoporated Cobb County, however the Smyrna City Limits are at its western border at Jane Lyle Rd. behind the apartments (formerly Post Vinings) on Atlanta Rd. at Ridge Rd.

Very cool, thanks for posting this. Checking out Google's satellite image, looks like it might have gone dry during the drought

There's another hidden lake I just found out about a couple of years ago out off Cascade road towards the river called Niskey Lake. Lots of really cool 1950's lake side houses. Worth a visit

Well, there is a lots of people interested in the Civil War history since it was fought right here. You won't many in the ATL who call Sherman and his bunch "our boys" since they flat run everybody out of town and burned it to the ground.

Gateway Signs Installed by the Cumberland CID

The new area gateway signage is being installed by the Cumberland Community Improvement District to designate and enhance the Cumberland area. Two vertical signs are at the Cumberland Boulevard/I-75 interchange and one vertical sign has been installed at Powers Ferry Road and Terrell Mill Road. Landscaping and finishing touches around the newest sign, pictured below, are now complete.

Pictured here is the gateway sign located at the Cobb Parkway/I-285 interchange.
