INNER CITY Ottawa

This neighbourhood is known as Centretown West or sometimes Dalhousie. One of the older
areas of the city, it is directly west of Downtown Ottawa. It's not a bad neighbourhood
but it has some real grit. Both Chinatown (seen here) and Little Italy (later in this thread)
are in this neighbourhood.

why in gods name i havent been in canada since i was 12 i don't know. soon...perhaps my birthday...

man, that really resembles the dna of the middle of south/north st. louis - detached townhouses and 4 plexes. however, many pictures really resemble a strange jumble of several different american midwestern cities - something different in my mind than pictures i've seen of hamilton or toronto.

Nice pictures once again! It looks like a gritty, but safe and liveable, neighborhood.

Bing Maps calls this area (based on street signs from your pictures) "Glebe". I guess that this is untrue?

Very nice. Edmonton's equivalent would probably be McCauley which also holds Chinatown (part of it) and Little Italy, although it has more crime and has a lot less cool buildings than this area of Ottawa.

^If I got it right, Glebe is south of Downtown and Centretown, the area south of the Queensway and is circled by Queen Elizabeth Dwy. Centretown West is west of Centretown and Downtown, west of Bonson Avenue.

Great pics as always, Flar, but "grit"? Ottawa's grit looks like it was designed by a committee of bureaucrats - tidy, safe and a bit bland.

Wow, I have never seen so many old carriageways in my own town. I guess I don't check out the back streets in that neighbourhood. Nice shots!

Incidentally, most of this area was destroyed during the great fire of 1900.

My one question, why do people paint brick? I always prefer brick's natural colour and painted brick becomes ugly as the paint begins to flake off.

These photos give a good idea of Ottawa's working class vernacular. Much different than Hamilton and Toronto, it has more in common with Quebec. I've always wondered why there are so many flat roofs, considering the amount of snow Ottawa gets.

The map is way off. The Glebe looks nothing like this and is one of Ottawa's most well-known and desirable neighbourhoods.

Great variety of styles there - I liked the geometry of the high rise residential block, with tiny signs of life poking out from the balconies.

Looks like the area of Bay, Cannon, Dundurn and oh...James North in Hamilton.

I know some of the giveaway is the painted brick but definitely a striking feature while in Ottawa too.

It looks like paving the front lawn for a driveway is more common in Ottawa than Thunder Bay.

They don't bother paving the front lawn in Thunder Bay, they just park the car on the grass.
