As of now, demolition is underway on the Broadway side. There may be a question as to whether they have bothered getting the proper permits and posting them, especially for asbestos, which is highly likely to be present.

On the architect's site, there is a reference to being finished in 2011, but I suspect that was put out before the recession, and 2013 would seem to be more reasonable.

I wouldn't get too hung up on that 'rendering' because it looks like a far cry from what actually will be (that is if this thing gets off the ground).

Before we get the skyscraper hotel, we need an empty lot, and before that, demolition of what stands now. It's happening on the Broadway side, with one of the buildings largely down.

When the construction site is up and ready to begin, we'll see if the artwork that gets posted resembles what we find posted here.

It looks like the curves are gone, and the project has gotten a bit more banal.

It's in Japanese because that was an announcement for a lecture discussing the building at Hosei University (based in Tokyo).

At least there's an attempt made at windows/glazing now. But I agree that it has lost the purity that it had before. It is a far less compelling image to me.

The latest design looks like a cost-cutting downgrade, but it will be buried deep in Midtown and will not spoil any prominent views, yet still adding to the height/mass of the skyline. Look at the similarly sized and similarly mediocre Random House Tower on the same block.

The architect's work looks uninspired and this building looks like an only mildly enthusiastic splurge on behalf of the developers.

Some more images from Curbed. I'm not all that crazy about these new renders, preferred the old more Chicago Trump Tower look with the rounded edges, and although the views from the UFO launch site on the roof will be spectacular, it is an ugly detail.

^^^To me that’s what makes the building and gives it a sense of individuality. It may be quirky and a little awkward, but I’ll take that over another flat roofed 700 footer.

City's Tallest Hotel Coming to Broadway and 54th

Granted the new 716-foot Marriott planned for Broadway and 54th Street, which was discovered by Curbed, is not one singular hotel, either, but two: a 30-story Marriott Residence Inn set atop a 24-story Marriott Courtyard built over a 20,000-square-foot retail pedestal. Up on the tippy
top of the building appears to be a three-story circular restaurant with a forest crown (take that, Boom Boom Room).

The project is dubbed the Marriott Central Park, so you can imagine what the views up there will be like.

The development site was assembled by little-known hotel developer Harry Gross, and Curbed notes that the project's building permits were just approved, though a construction timeline is unclear. A fact sheet from architect Nobutaka Ashihara notes
a 2011 completion, though that seems pretty fast for a project of this magnitude.

I imagine this will impact the skyline but by how much? And there seem to be three tall floors on the base, retail?

There seems to be somewhat of a curve if you look closely at the 2nd and 3rd photo. I think its a downgrade from the original concept but it is not that bad.
