Thunder Roads: THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

When a man achieves the noble age of 30, only the grandest and most triumphant of roadtrips shall do.

The Pacific Northwest was a giant blank spot on my map.

Let's go.

Seattle, Washington

Everett, WA (pop. 91,000)

Ferry to Whidbey Island

North end of Whidbey Is.

Skagit Bay from Mt. Erie on Fidalgo Island

Anacortes, WA (pop. 14,500)

Padilla Bay

I love how people consider the entire state of New Jersey uninhabitable because we have an oil refinery near the airport, as if such a thing would never exist anywhere else...

Anacortes

Bellingham, WA (pop.70,000)

Vancouver, BC

---stay tuned for a separate complete thread of the sublime city of Vancouver---

Fraser Valley, British Columbia

Manning Provincial Park, BC

Getting around to the dry side of the mountains

Samilkameen River, BC

Heading to Osoyoos, BC

Back in the US.

Omak, WA, (pop. 4,700) in the Okanogan Valley

Okanogan, WA (pop.2,700)

Douglas County, WA

Grand Coulee, WA

Spokane, WA

---stay tuned for a complete tour of the surprisingly gritty city of Spokane---

Lake Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, Idaho

The Idaho Panhandle

Benewah County, ID

Latah County, ID – The greater Palouse region of Eastern Washington and NW Idaho is characterized by rolling wheatfields.

Nez Perce County, ID

Wacky road down into the town of Lewiston, on the Snake River

Lewiston and south

I think Luke Skywalker grew up around here

Pomeroy, WA (pop. 1,500) in the southeastern part of the state

Garfield County, WA

Waitsburg, WA (pop. 1,200) in Walla Walla County

Walla Walla County

The town of Walla Walla (pop. 29,000)

Further west, past the delightful city of Yakima, heading up into the Cascades

Mt. Rainier, towering a mighty 14,411 feet above the Cascades

Little Tahoma, Rainier's 11,000 ft. appendage

Portland, Oregon

Heading NW out of Portland towards the coast

Ecola State Park, OR

Astoria, OR (pop.9,800)

Astoria and the Columbia River

Clatsop County, OR

Astoria

Youngs River, OR

Long bridge across the Columbia towards Washington State

Aberdeen, WA – a gritty mill town seemingly transplanted from Upstate NY or West Virginia

The Olympic Peninsula – the temperate rainforest

Lake Crescent, at the north end of the peninsula

Near Port Angeles, WA

From the top of Mt. Walker (2,800 ft)

yikes

Mt. Constance (?)

The Olympic Mountains

Washington State Capitol, Olympia

Port of Olympia

Thurston County courthouse

Downtown Olympia. A nice, active place, but not too photogenic.

Tacoma, WA

---stay tuned for a complete thread from the hard-nosed port city of Tacoma---

8 days, 1,940 miles, 1,240 pictures

I have conquered much, but so much awaits. I dig America's vastness. It's a life's work for the geographically curious.

A part of the world I know all too well. It looks like you had one hell of a road trip. Great job!

One quick quibble; how can you do the PNW and leave out Vancouver Island? It's one of the jewels of the region.

Fantastic, and I too love the map. My map would be like the next ring south and west around yours down the the gulf coast and over to denver, spread much, much, much thinner, with a donut hole in that awesome awesome thick sinew between cleveland the north east (north of philly). I've seen much, much, much, much, much more of Illinois outside of Chicagoland than I ever bargained for, though. You have a need, I can feel, to fill in some rte 66 country between sprangfield, il and okc, to be sure.

Just a few days ago I was thinking about you and the lack of any recent Chicago photo threads. Now I know what you've been up to! I'll be turning 30 in a little over a year and I too hope to go on a big trip to celebrate the occasion (likely Australia & possibly New Zealand).

Enjoyable photos! I'll be heading up to Seattle & Portland next Spring and I can't wait. Photos threads like this help tide me over until I'm able to enjoy in person.

Great pictures! It looks like you saw some amazing places, both natural and urban. You covered a lot of the Pacific Northwest.

How did you find out about that road in Lewiston? Did you come across it randomly looking for a view of the town, or did you know about it beforehand? I just looked it up and it's crazy!
