That's partially true and it's why we are the most humid area in Canada. However cold spells, are nowhere near as brutal here as they are in Northern Ontario.
Montreal: only 4 -20C or below lows this winter, all in January
Ottawa: official data not available, should approximately be the same as MTL
North Bay: 17 -20C or below lows this winter, starting in December until March
Sudbury: 14 -20C or below lows this winter (with a few days missing data so we might be closer to 20), starting in December until March.
We also have a full month (and sometimes even more) longer growing season.
It must be the Great Lakes moderating the temperatures.
