I doubt that the crane is for that development. Maybe its for the massive appartment development (700ish units)that council approved late last year, or early this year?
I thought someone said that the area was already zoned to allow for office buildings so no approval was needed.

edit:
The land is zoned IP - prestige industrial. Office is a
Permitted use where there is a gross floor area (GFA) of up to 500m2 on a single lot basis, and discretionary use where there is a GFA of greater than
500m2.

Yes, I am the one that said offices were a permitted use, to a small scale only. These offices are discretionary, as they are closer to 4000m2 per building. They must be approved by council before anything can happen.

Councillor O'Donnell was quoted in the Leader Post suggesting that Regina might be against suburban office development, and tha tthis development, and one other proposal would be better suited to a downtown location.

I fully agree...we do not need 160,000ft2 of office space located that far outside of downtown, buildings that size should be located in the core.

That very well could be. In any case, it's one hell of a sight in those parts ---- especially when it's near the airport. It's definitely worth having a look!

I'm going to have to get down there to take a few pictures while it's there. Hopefully it will be there longer than this weekend.. as I might not be able to get down there until then.

Oh, you need not worry!! That crane will be there for at least two months. One of the buildings in that project is well on its way. They are going balls-out on this (office?) project since they want to have occupancy by fall of '11.

There are some better shots in this brochure:

Those are actually pretty nice. Very modern and sleek, and give off good light by the looks of it.

It will be cool if they can replace the bulbs with green and red for Christmas time..or green and white when the Riders are back in the Cup in 2011 (Grrrrrrrr...).

I would have to agree with you for once. That would be an excellent idea. A street perhaps? Or a park? L. Nielsen park has a nice ring to it.

I wonder if they bought the metal halide or LED version? With the ability to specify colors it would be nice if they sprung for the LED version.

Last I heard, the City had purchased both metal halide and LED versions. The metal halide ones were to be used for street lighting at either end of the plaza on 12th, on Cornwall and on Scarth, and the LED versions were be used in the living rooms at the south edge of the plaza. The LED versions were to be programmable for seasonal light displays, and/or for during concert or festival events. Programmable LEDs were also originally planned for the shade screens as well.

No offense, but that would be a terrible idea (IMO) and a waste of money. This isn't anywhere near the most unsafe highway in Saskatchewan.

It sounds like Saskatoon is getting the same lights for its big civic project downtown:

Where was the University of Regina in trying to attract the architecture school? An absolute shame that it seems to have automatically gone to the U of S. The U of R needs to start opening up new programs in order to gain a better reputation and attract new students!

I agree completely. I was born in Regina, but because of the lackluster engineering program at U of R I was forced to go to U of S.

I believe it is better suited to Regina because it does, in my opinion have much better architecture. From all eras. Luckily for me, I am living in Saskatoon right now and am very happy with the news since I am very interested in studying there when it opens.
