Christmas in Vancouver

Was just checking out some local blogs to see what's what for Christmas. Not much mentioned yet, but www.vancitybuzz.com has two items of interest, well for me at least

There is going to be a German Christmas Market in Queen Elizabeth Theatre plaza from Nov 24 to Dec 24, 11am to 9 pm. At least it will help animate that sterile location (maybe they should have held it at the Olympic Village!).

Steveston has its annual arrival of Santa (by whale-watching boat!), carolling through the village, tree-lighting by the mayor, and the Stanley Park horse-drawn carriages will be in attendance. This year it is on Sunday, November 28, Santa arrives at 1 p.m. The place gets really packed and the usual dignitaries attend.

New Westminster has the Christmas Parade of Lights
Dec 4 @ 4pm down columbia street
they also have the tree lighting - i think the same day at hyack square

Edmonds st. has their own parade, also they have some x-mas decorations all around the area, even a giant christmas tree at the corner of Kingsway and edmonds.

Hey, that's fantastic! Last year, in another thread, I was musing about a traditional German Christmas Market happening here in Vancouver. The ones in Germany, esp. the ones in Munich, Nuremberg, and Dresden are something to behold.

Looks like they will be importing huge German nutcrackers, the traditional huts decorated in pine branches, rows of Christmas tree strung up with thousands of traditional white lights, traditional Christmas carolers, Gluewein!, gingerbread, bratwurst on a bun, etc., etc.

The centre piece of the Christmas Market will be a festively decorated stage which creates a unique Christmas atmosphere when surrounded by more than 30 traditional wooden booths and rows of Christmas trees with thousands of fairy lights.

Fantastic food at the Vancouver Christmas Market. There will be a mix of food and merchandise booths including some specialties such as German Bratwurst, suckling pig and Swiss Raclette, traditional Christmas cookies, Lebkuchen, roasted chestnuts and spiced Christmas Cake (Stollen). Beverages will include hot spiced apple cider and authentic hot spiced red wine (Gluehwein) and a selection of German beers.

The merchandise will include authentic wood carvings and wooden toys, knitted clothes and scarves, Christmas pyramids and tree balls, tin toys, stain glass, and nutcrackers in various sizes as well as live glass blowing demonstrations.

The opening of the first annual Vancouver Christmas Market has been delayed
due to a construction accident that resulted in a fire at the site on the Queen Elizabeth Theatre
Plaza Wednesday morning.
We are still very committed to opening the Market and making the Vancouver Christmas Market a great success.

Edmonds Santa Claus parade was on yesterday, didn't go but many long time residents of burnaby like to take their families there.

the market was opened today earlier than they expected

i don't know if its ironic but they probably had a better turn out thanks to the fire and all the publicity the market got many people didn't know about the market until they heard about the fire and they sure know about the market now

Well. Some retailers have started the Boxing Day or pre-Boxing Day sale.
