I don't mind this. Sure, it's not stunning but it will have decent street presence.

This looks awesome; I really like the totem pole! Please see current structure for why this looks 100x better in terms of street interaction.

This is probably the most awkward angle. Good thing I don't often hover 200m above the Ottawa skyline .

Looks alright...I like that it's got that much glass, and the fact that it's more than 2x taller then the building it replaces...

Not bad; not great either. in the second rendering, the front of the building would probably look better if the set back tower portion were moved forward to cover that beige area just in front of it, and if the podium had something other than the weird 'T' design facing Elgin.

There seems to be some 1960's influence here, which is not something you see in any modern-day architecture. An observation, not a criticism. That said, a much better use of the space than the Lorne building.

Is that an actual 'green' roof?

I wouldn't say that. Just the other day I was staying in the QE Hotel in MTL and was commenting on how I loved the modern buildings at and surrounding Place Ville-Marie have great 1960's-influenced international architecture. Although I think some of those buildings were actually constructed in the 60's and re-clad in the last decade while retaining some of the original character. Nonetheless, it's a decade that doesn't get enough credit and the fact it was followed by the 70's and 80's makes it all the more impressive.

Agree with the 70s and 80s comment. Yes, we need more blue glass boxes (shudder...)

The 60s (pre-Brutalist) period is not bad...in fact, I wish there was more 60s and less 70s in Ottawa. For example, that Queen Street building across from World Exchange, or the addition wings to the hideous main building of the national library on Wellington. Something very Teutonic, European, and efficiently grand about those styles.
As you said, 'International architecture'.

Too bad about those later decades, though.

In the end, this building will be modern, house more stuff, waste less energy, and be better looking than its stumpy predecessor. Which translates into an improvement.

Yes, apparently:

Project Details:
The 90 Elgin Street project features an eight-storey pavillion of noble character fronting Elgin Street. Sympathetic in scale and materiality to the context of Confederation Square, this pavilion is visually anchored by means of green pedestrian bridges to a seventeen-storey tower. This plan configuration produces facades both abutting and recessed from Slater and Albert streets to create a layered composition. In addition to the requisite LEED Gold certification, sustainable design principles are fundamental to the design scheme. This building will incorporate extensive energy modeling. Materials are natural, robust and thorughly considered for each application. They include limestone within the building envelope and as a finishing material for floors and walls within the building. The finishing of walls, ceiilngs, millwork and other accent opportunities of interior spaces will incorporate reclaimed woods from the national capital region. A mosaic pattern of solids and voids, between opague metal and transparent glass panels, is a key component of the compositon. Through this rich patina, it carries a dialogue with the copper used on buildings surrounding Confederation Square. Vegetated green roofs have been designed at the 2nd and 9th floors. A six storey high exterior vegetated green wall, on the east side of Slater Street courtyard, creates a visual connection with the vegetated green roofs on the 2nd floor and is overseen by the Conference Center Suite to the 8th floor. This green wall becomes a visible statement of purpose for the introduction of the natural environment on entering and within the building.

Just curious...
Anybody know how they're going to bring down the Lorne Building? Recking ball? Explosives?

An implosion would be great, but the proximity to other buildings and it's location would probably mean they'll dismantle it (???)

So far it seems they are dismantling it. There is a big pile of bricks behind the building that appear to be from inside.

Hmmm, I wonder then where DND assets will conduct "Town Halls" and other such meetings since the theatre in the Lorne is no more...

there's a 400 seat state of the art auditorium at carling...and the cafeteria and Spire area (big glass dome you see from teh 417) has plenty of room to fit 1000+ town halls...that's how nortel did it in the day

What's with the late fad with "UPC barcode" glass and steel decorative thingies? First the Algonquin building at Baseline, now this.

Renderings look really cool overall, and it's great to see the old building being dismantled already in the last 2 weeks (mechanical, roof, and some of the top floor have already been taken down).

True, the above picture is out of date at this point.
