Unfortunately it doesn't appear to cover the back of the Remai Arts Centre at all...

St. Johns has a beautiful arena "Mile One Centre"...it's a damn shame they don't have the Leafs anymore but glad to at least see something coming back again. I think it'd be sweet to see a home win in front of 6500 strong and than go get liqued on George St

Announcement of "major donor" to AGS tomorrow at 11 am. Supposedly it will be record setting.

Any guesses?

No surprise another Toronto consultant has found inspiration in our flatness. This is so predictable. Just few years ago Regina hired an out of town consultant to come up with a new slogan and all the options they put forth related to flatness!

With all due respect to our architect friends on here, sometimes I just wish architects would say "because it looks pretty!" when asked why they designed a certain building the way they did. A lot of the time all this symbolic representation stuff sounds like they just made it up after the fact!

If it was flat they would say it represents the prairie, if it was curved it would be the river, if it was blue it would be the sky, brown the earth, jagged a birch tree, and circular...Tommy Douglas and prairie socialism binding us together against our harsh elements.

In other news...the gallery is growing on me. It's unfortunate though that nothing is being done with the edge of the "desination complex" along that side street (can't remember the street name). Perhaps they could at least put some kind of art installation there?

haha i think "because it looks pretty" has its place, though probably wouldn't suffice as an overall design concept :p

but yeah, conceptual discourse can get a bit pompous at times. though to be fair some connections may only become clear after the fact, even to the designers. i think it's like any creative act open to ongoing interpretation, not just by the audience but the authors as well. inspiration isn't always instantly apparent.

Thanks to a $30-million contribution from one of Saskatoon’s most well-known philanthropists, the Art Gallery of Saskatchewan is a giant step closer to becoming reality.

Ellen Remai has made was is believed to be the largest-ever donation to an art gallery in Canada, contributing $30 million toward the construction of what will be known as the Ellen Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan.

WOW, this is great news!

I know the Remai family gets dumped on a lot on this forum, for their fugly spa/hotel project on Parcel Y that fell through (thankfully), and their hideous condo projects (though the College & Clarence project is a nice improvement), but for all their philanthropy in this city they deserve our admiration and respect.

Seriously, 30 million bones... that's unheard of for a single donation in this city! And it's $30 million that's going to good quality, lasting architecture, and not just another brick condo on the riverbank.

For that, I have no objections to the name change, and I'm heartened by this news because it makes the AGS.... errr.... the ERAGS.... more "a go" than ever!

Still, I have questions about the fundraising campaign. The media has reported that $20 million was the goal. Does this $30 million completely smash that target in one swoop, or is $20 mil a goal that's separate from this donation? I don't have all the numbers in front of me to see what adds up to the $84 million....

The original, as pictured above. Nasser's is the one that will be built there.

This is great news. Three or four years from now, we will have a very improved south downtown thanks to Kay Nasser, Ellen Remai and the Tonko group. Perhaps Edgar Properties will join in on the party (not likely - they're enjoying their gravel parking lot revenue too much).

The owners of Market Mall are reaching for new heights in the coming year. The mall is planning a major expansion, which could see a new condo tower rise up on the south side.

Management also bought out the lease for Zeller's, which is slated to close in 2012. That opens up space for new tenants, and a 12 to 18,000 square foot expansion to the front of the building.

It's hoped the massive face lift will attract younger shoppers.

AGS sounded way cooler than ERAGS... haha.... when the name gets too long it doesn't sound right.

.....I know they just donated a poop-load of money to a great cause but really do we have to name the whole thing after them....I would really like it to stay the Art Gallery of Saskatchewan....name a floor after them or something...or maybe the parking lot, seeing as that will look like most of the buildings they have built around Saskatoon to date...haha. But seriously, give them recognition but don't name the whole thing after them. They can be humble and have the self-satisfaction of knowing they did a great thing without it right?
