Springfield, MA, and Albany, NY

My friend and I are going to Boston, and on the way back we have a chance to either stay overnight in Springfield, MA or Albany, NY.
If we stay in Springfield, it will cost us an extra 30 bucks on our train tickets.

Have any of you been to either city? Which one would you say would be more active in the central city on a Wednesday night, and be cool to stroll around in, etc?

We have wanted to see Empire State Plaza, but we are torn as to which city to go to, as both are around the same size, etc.

Check and see if the Basketball Hall of Fame is open at night.

Springfield is smaller, and was recently hit by tornadoes. Also, I am assuming you are from Toronto, and Albany is a solid hour closer. You would probably be better off going there.

I think Albany has a more diverse group of buildings if you wanted to do a picture taking stroll.

If you are taking Route 90 you could always swing down through Springfield on your way to Albany. It's only about 10-15 minutes south of the highway. You could probably walk around the entire downtown in under half an hour.

We are going by train. Otherwise we would do something like that.
