excellent show, tubs. i've always liked allentown. (go iron pigs!) the fairgrounds farmers market there is great.

I'll agree that Allentown doesn't get enough rep. I spent a day there some years back and was impressed with the urban fabric. The city has some grit, but not near what many other rust belt cities have.

Tt, where did you take the overhead pics from? I tried to get to the upper floors of the PA Power & Light building when I was there, but security put the stops to that.

And check out the West End sometime. It's truly beautiful. Allentown is actually a pretty diverse place. I moved there in 1971 from Albany (left in 1978 after graduating from William Allen HS). Downtown Allentown was an amazingly vibrant, crowded place. That new-ish PP&L complex at 9th & Hamilton, which I'm sure you noticed, used to be the site of the impressive Hess's Department Store, a real old-school gem. Further down Hamilton, east of 7th Street was Leh's Department Store, another old-school gem, though less upscale than Hess's. When I drive down Hamilton Street these days, I wonder how things can change so much.

I am so happy to finally see a great photo thread on Allentown. I have been there several times and it packs an urban punch and it is diverse. There is a lot of NYC and Philly influence on Allentown. A lot of people have moved there since the cost of living is much lower. Some commute to Philly and NYC/Jersey from Allentown in pretty suprising numbers. The metro area itself is pretty large too so it has that draw and its growing pretty quickly.

This just reminds me of how unfamiliar I am with the "interior east," or how i still don't really have a feel for the compact geography of the eastern seaboard states...I didn't realize how close it was to Philly.

I've heard so many bad things about Allentown, such as "the city is ghetto," and comments like that. It's hard to believe after seeing the pictures. The city doesn't look bad at all. And the architecture looks great.

I forget about Allentown a lot. Usually I think of Harrisburg (which I think feels bigger) as the state's 3rd city.

Anyway, nice to see it. Another one of these mid-sized mid-Atlantic cities that I need to visit.

Also apparent from this photo, TURRETS: One of the worst proliferators of satellite dishes.

Allentown; Doesn't look as cool as I thought it was. lol. Looks very similar to Reading, PA it seems. Also looks like a bigger Wilkes-Barre.

Harrisburg is def a much more impressive 3rd city.
