As mentioned in my previous thread, here is the second of nine sets: Kyoto, Japan. I found the city fascinating. So much well preserved history. The gardens were all immaculately organized and well kept, even in the dead of winter. There were so many temples I just didn't have time to see them all. I only got to spend about a half hour at the famous orange gates, not nearly enough time to properly photograph them. The kabuki theater was closed for the season so I missed that too. I did happen to see many Geisha walking the streets. From what I was told, the girls with white faces are Geisha, the girls in traditional dress but no face paint are not. Kyoto is a place I would return to in a heartbeat.
Wow! Kyoto is a city of such historical, natural, and cultural beauty. A city like no other. Japan has always fascinated me with their intriguing balance of tradition and modernity.

I was in Kyoto back in 2002, and to be honest, aside from the central train station and the historic area, I didn't care too much for the city center. It looked rather industrial, bleak, and charmless.
According to your pictures, I must've really missed out on some of these great spots!

excellent set, as usual. power lines, roof lines, brushstroke lines. no language looks better written (and sculpted) than japanese. sorry, arabic. the pic with the dude and the seagulls(?) was my favorite till miss high heeled boots walked by.

That's an understandable and very common first impression, but usually visitors wind up falling in love with the city. Maybe you needed a better guide!

Yes Kyoto has some ugliness to it. I got lost in a section of town that could have easily been suburban-industrial east coast US. The historical areas are unreal. I missed a lot of Unesco sites due to time constraints, the place has a lot going on.
Seagull guy is one of my favorites too. I have some similar shots from Tokyo that I'll post later, apparently feeding birds from bridges is a fairly common activity in Japan. This guy was genuinely shocked how close the birds got, maybe a tourist from the mainland.
Never thought about the kyoto tokyo... interesting.
I don't think I have ever seen Kyoto on here. Thanks for the great look into the city. Looks like it's very traditional, as I expected. You have a lot of really gorgeous depth of field shots. Have you ever thought of working for a travel magazine? You seem like the perfeect fit.
