Still great news for Boise, just that I don't think the actual building part of this is going to be as tall as most of you might expect it to be...

none of us think the roofline is the full height. we're all aware that the spire is part of the final height.

nevertheless, if the official height is 352' and the spire is, say, 40', that still means the roofline of this building is still nearly 50' higher than boise's current tallest across the street, so it will be visually obvious that it's taller.

given the tower's location and the arduous history of the site itself, it's a solid project for downtown. the fact that it will be a new tallest is merely icing on the cake.

I'm very happy to hear they increased the height! Boise needs a new tallest building and a new downtown icon.
I actually liked the old renderings better, but oh well.

groundbreaking ceremony held today. crane will be up soon; construction expected to be completed in early 2014.

from the local paper:

Quote:
Ground broken for 18-floor building in The Hole in Downtown Boise

Zions Bank and Gardner Co., a developer, held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday on the $76 million retail and office tower that will fill the infamous hole at 8th and Main streets in Boise.

The tower is 60 percent leased. It will be Zions' Idaho headquarters. Other previously announced tenants include Ruth's Chris Steak House, the Holland & Hart law firm, the Idaho Technology Council, First American Title and CTA Architects Engineers, which designed the building.

The building will be constructed mostly of various granites, metals, glass and precast concrete. To help the building appear less imposing to pedestrians on 8th Street and blend with buildings across the street, the top floors will be set back from the top edge of the bottom five floors.

Construction of the building ends a 25-year plague at the corner since the Eastman Building burned there in 1987, spawning years of lawsuits and failed attempts at development.

I still sort of can't believe this is happening. I have been waiting for a tower to be built there for SO LONG. I can remember something like 12 years ago when they started digging the hole. This is really exciting for me and I'm glad it's a nice design and is going to be the tallest.
Thanks for the updates.

a few quick updates:

1 - the foundation has been poured (see picture below from the pouring which happened about 2 weeks ago).

2 - the crane is scheduled to be installed on September 15th.

3 - they're anticipating that the steel structure will top out sometime in february.

the latest info we have is that the final height to the top of the spire is 315'.

unless a bird lands on the spire, and if that bird is an adult emperor penguin, the height would be 319'.

but we're all out of penguins, so 315' it is.

315' is a good solid height for Boise. Should look good.

Oh, actually I have a Sarus Crane in my back room, so maybe I can coerce it into landing up there.

Thanks for posting the picture Boisebro. Good news, I just saw that the Simplot family is building a new ten story tower next to the JUMP project two blocks away. This new building is not posted on the Boise buildings main page yet.
