Good photos, flar. It looks as though there are a lot of nice pre-war houses in the Glebe. I only know about the Bank St. portion of the neighbourhood, so it was neat seeing pretty much the residential/off the beaten path side to the Glebe.

Great shots as always, Flar. It's easy to criticize Glebites, but when you look through photos like these, one wonders how much of the biting stereotypes are born of jealousy.

Why do people criticize Glebites? I want to be one! I have never seen or heard of this neighborhood. For me it is love at first sight

Many years ago, when my Ottawa consisted entirely of Centretown and The Market, I bumped into a colleague (classic high-powered civil servant "yuppie" as they were known at the time) who had just bought a home in the Glebe (where else?). The way she blanched and took on a look of horror when in reference to the Glebe I said that "I seldom get out to the suburbs" will stay with me forever.

Super thread, as always, Flar. I wish you had shown more of the infill and other modern housing in the Glebe - some of it is very sensitive to the historic nature of the residential area, some considerably less so.

Nice pictures. I didn't know where this neighborhood was, but it appears that it's south of Highway 417 and surrounded by the river on most sides. What do you know about this area?

Nice shots! The Glebe looks exactly as I remember it - beautiful and just a bit boring. Solidly upper-middle class. Old Ottawa South would be a good candidate for a photothread too...

I guess I didn't notice it as much when I lived there, but Ottawa really has a unique housing stock for an Ontario city. It can be much more esoteric than Toronto or Hamilton with wildly varying styles within the same neighbourhood.

The name comes from land originally allocated to an Ottawa church (glebe lands). It was developed in the late 1800's as pretty much Ottawa's first "suburb". Today it is probably the city's most desirable and expensive residential area, although it is not as posh as Rockcliffe Park. As Flar's photos show, there is actually a mix of old housing stock but most of those large detached homes would sell for well over a million dollars.

Pretty much summed up by kwoldtimer. This is a very desirable neighbourhood with a powerful neighbourhood association. It dates from the late 1800s when some church lands were opened up for development. It's an early suburb. I don't know for sure, but I assume there was a streetcar running on Bank St. back in the day.

I think I've remarked about the hodge-podge of different housing styles in Ottawa before. Houses in the Glebe range from late Victorian to revival styles of the 20s and 30s. By contrast, Hamilton and Toronto have some very uniform neighbourhoods. In terms of variety of styles, the Glebe is probably most comparable to the Annex in Toronto and Kirkendall in Hamilton.

I plan to photograph the western part of the Glebe in the spring while the tulip festival is on, should be very colourful.
