The COMPLETE tour of the state of Delaware

There are 57 municipalities in the state of Delaware. I have visited and photgraphed all 57 of them, and at some point in the last 7 years, have produced photothreads for all 57 places. After finally posting the photothread for the last municipality that I hadn't shown yet, Bridgeville, it's time to showcase the entire state for everyone. As my first photothread of the year, I thought that this would be a nice way to open up 2012.

Below, you will find at least 2 pictures of each city, town, and village in Delaware, that I think accurately portray each community. Some pictures are regular street scenes, and some are of municipal landmarks. For many places, I included more than my minimum of 2 pictures, in order to give you a better idea of what the place is like. For the most part, a place with more pictures is more prominent than a place with less pictures. They are categorized by county, and are in a somewhat geographical order.

Delaware does not follow the township format found in most northern states. However, we do have "hundreds" (one of the unique things about Delaware), which functioned similarly to townships but are not municipalities anymore. You will not find hundreds in this thread, but some day maybe I'll document all of Delaware's hundreds.

As a bonus, I am going to include 2 pictures of many of Delaware's notable unincorporated communities.

I hope that you have enjoyed my showcase of my state over the years. If so, don't fear that the Delaware threads are over. There are still places to show. For instance, see my 2011 year in review to see places that I have yet to show. Some places, like Delaware City, were shown so long ago that it's time to re-showcase the place. Neighborhood tours in Wilmington, like Quaker Hill, West Center City, Little Italy, and others will also be forthcoming. Until then, though, enjoy your tour of the First State that has been 7 years in the making.

Great thread! I go down a few times a year and most of the drive through looks like strait suburbs however this thread is changing my perception. Some good looking houses you've shown here.

Delaware has always been a drive-through state for me, I suppose I should stop and smell the roses sometime.

i'm going to go out on a limb and call this "comprehensive". xzmattzx is well aware.

the new castle and bridgeville sections were the best of this thread, but rehoboth is by far my favorite place in delaware, and my favorite beach town in the US for that matter.

I spent every summer from 0 to 23 in Bethany Beach. Nice town, nice area, I don't think I could live there year round though.

My boyfriend's family owns this store (Sea Crest). If you're ever in Bethany, go in and spend lots of money. They are a great family.

I like Rehoboth as well. Spent a birthday at the Dogfish Head brewpub. That was back when you couldnt get Dogfish Head west of the Mississippi, or Appalachians [or whatever], or Deschutes east of the Rockies, and that sort of thing I'm nostalgic for, kind of.

Great tour. I have enjoyed your Delaware threads over the years and probably know the state much better because of them.

Congrats on the completion of an ambitious task. I better get cracking if I want to hit all 577 New Jersey municipalities.

When I hear of Delaware I always think of the Simpsons:

"I want to see Wilmington!"
"I want to visit a screen door factory!"
"Yup.. Delaware's got it all."

Nice photos.

Rehoboth may be my favorite beach town, too.

Xzmattzx, this is a great collection of photographs and a wonderful representation of the state. It makes me miss Delaware and I have never lived there! It was my getaway for many years.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! Hopefully no one is all Delawared out, because I'll be putting up more Delaware threads in the coming months. Don't ignore them when I post them, just because you've seen every place in the state!

Now you just need to come back and take some pictures for your ColDay series and for UrbanOhio.com.

What you see from I-95 is no indication of what the entire state is like. You should know this; New Jersey is more than what you see from the Turnpike.

Definitely. Even if you're short on time, there's plenty of places to see near the expressways.

More to come, but maybe it's time to see it in person again and give your take on parts of the state.

Indeed. Northern Delaware is dense with an industrial past and a white collar present, while Slower Lower Delaware is still almost agricultural. Even with the size of our small state, there's differences in character of places, with northern influences in the north and southern influences in the south.

On the contrary, now you have an idea of what places you would like to visit. You can then decide what's not worth visiting, as well. And no, not every place is not worth visiting!

I'd be a tenth of the way there if I was trying it. Next up, photographing all of the county seats in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, and New Jersey. I'm pretty well into the list.

Nice photos.
I remember that. But I heard more about the Wayne's World bit; most states are known by the public for a building or monument or park, but Delaware is known by the public for being a place that no one knows about. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.

Rehoboth is one of my favorite places too. I always go there if I'm going to the beach for a day, because I can pick up salt water taffy at Dolle's and it's the first beach town (technically Lewes is, but swimming in the bay just isn't the same). When I'm with friends, though, we hit up Dewey, for obvious reasons.
