First of all, it is completely meaningless to post a bunch of empirical figures without citing the source of those figures, so we may judge their credibility. Secondly, just because something is on the Internet does not make it true. And thirdly, official attendance figures come directly from the franchises themselves or the league, both of whom obviously have an invested interest in inflating attendance numbers. This happens all the time, in many different leagues, as anyone with two eyes who attends or watches struggling teams knows for himself.

The visual evidence speaks for itself. But who are you going to believe, the league or your lying eyes?

They're just from Wikipedia.

Sure, I guess there could be somebody getting their jollies by just coming up with random numbers, but I think their is some meaning to them. Even if it's simply tickets sold, it counts for the team's coffers.

Here's another video (or I suppose I could just watch the one that shows a few hundred and just assume it's like that 17 times a season).

Video Link

Sure, the 27,000 seat stadium is nowhere near full, but I never claimed they had strong fan support; I claimed their average was within the numbers somebody had mentioned.

I have to doubt those numbers. Maybe thats tickets sold/given away with a slurpee at 7-11, get a free ticket with your 6 pack of bud or something. Not actual numbers in the stands. Phoenix is bad for this when giving attendance figures for Coyotes games.

Assuming MLS ever makes further expansion into Canada (and I can't imagine they'd do that for a while, I think they'll probably cap the league at 20 teams for the forseeable future) I would think Edmonton and Ottawa would be considered before Calgary. Ottawa has already made attempts at getting an MLS franchise and Edmonton already has the framework of an NASL team.

I grew up in Calgary and I can't really picture soccer catching on there, anyway.

I agree with you about Calgary not being at the top of the list.

I do think, however, that it would do alright. Just as in the rest of the country, it's the most participated-in sport in the city. A couple cousins of mine played, and a bunch of my friends played as kids. Quite a ways down the road, I could see a team drawing decent numbers.

I hope Montreal wins today against Columbus Crew. They are a far weaker team than they used to be. Time to get our first victory! It starts at 4 pm ET.

Btw, Michael Ballack will officially join an MLS team this summer! He is the ex captain of Germany. He is currently playing for Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen

I'll be watching, though it sucks having to stream the games since I'm in Mexico City at the moment.

I had already heard the rumors about Michael Ballack joining (possibly) Montreal Impact, and I also heard the same thing about Del Piero. I honestly think Del Piero would be better since Montreal is lacking a strong attacker with experience.

WTF a Red card! Now Montreal is playing with 10

Edit: Columbus 1 - 0 Montreal.

Bullshit refereeing, you can tell MTL is playing 10 vs 12 (one of them dressed in black)

LOL @ referee

He gives us a red card early in the game and then gives them a penalty.

No other thread for this so posting here. Canada just beat the US 2-0 in Olympic qualifying, pretty significant upset. Wow.

Jesus, I was going to watch that (actually did watch the first 20 seconds or so), but I had a bit of a sports overdose today.

Flames-Stars
Canada-Korea (curling)
OSU-Syracuse (had to watch to keep sending updates to my friend who had to miss the game. I couldn't care less about basketball)
Ottawa-Pittsburgh
Vancouver-Colorado

All while trying to write a term paper.

Now I'm really kicking myself for tuning out.

But hey, awesome result!

The referee gave the game away against Columbus. I think he gave at least 5 yellow cards, 1 red card and a penalty, all that to the Impact. Terrible.

I can't believe Toronto lost 0-3 to San Jose. It's a little bit disturbing, considering they'll be clashing with Santos Laguna, a mexican club a lot stronger in a couple days in the CCL semi-finals. Toronto FC has been terrible since its inauguration year. Anyways its normal, since all the sports team in Toronto suck and will always suck anyways...

Then they give up a 90th minute goal to Cuba. Huge difference between playing Mexico and Honduras!

Then again, we could play the US 10 times and only win one or two. After the draw to El Salvador (then seeing them beat Cuba 4-0), managing to be in the top two would still be a good result here. We've beaten Mexico before, no? It's not entirely hopeless.

Then again, El Salvador leads the US 2-1 at the half.

It would be great if they play to a draw.

Edit2: No wait, then El Salvador would finish 1st?

Is there any way for Canada to finish 1st?
