Gateway Green supporters optimistic about talks

People advocating for development of a unique Northeast Portland park recently got one step closer to realizing their vision.

Thirty-five acres of land in the Gateway neighborhood sit trapped between Interstate 205 on one side and Interstate 84 on the other. The Oregon Department of Transportation owns the land, slightly north of the Gateway Transit Center, but it is cut off from vehicle access and undevelopable by conventional standards.

After years of negotiating, ODOT and Portland Parks and Recreation are now working on a deal to convey the underused property to the city, which will be necessary in order for Gateway Green, as the park will be called, to become a reality.

The park land, at the confluence of the I-205 bike trail and the future Sullivan’s Gulch trail, will include a mountain biking course, hiking trails, open space for picnicking, alternative energy resources, and a facility for cyclocross – a sport where bike racers take on tricky terrain and obstacles.

With the Lumberyard – an indoor bike park on nearby Northeast 82nd Avenue – opening this week, the area is poised to become a destination for cyclists.
