^It was sleepy. Also in 2002, Seattle was still in dotcom bust hangover mode. It's astounding the amount of change that has occurred since I moved here in 2004, which, I would say, was still a sleepy time for Seattle. This has always been a boom and bust town.

Seattle will always seem sleepy when coming from a SF type city, to say nothing of a NY.

But I agree that we've changed dramatically since 2002. One nice thing about a "transitioning" city (vs. one that's already great) is that we've have a lot of room to infill, and in our case we're taking advantage of it. Every decade is substantially better than the one before in terms of urban intensity. Personally I wish we were a decade ahead of today....

Overcast Seattle, FTW. This walkway really grabbed me. Very interesting.

And this hillside neighborhood near downtown has always been interesting to me. What is the name of it? I would guess this is probably one of the densist residential areas in the city?

The walkway is part of Freeway Park. It's actually between two sizeable lids over I-5, one being the south (or southwest) half of Freeway Park (vs. the northern part over the garage shown), and the other being the original half of the convention center. The convention center escalators plus the freeway crossing options make for a nice walk between the CBD's retail district and First Hill, a land of hospitals and apartments.

The neighborhood in the second picture is part of Capitol Hill, which is connected to First Hill but less of an incline. While it might not be our densest neighborhood (parts of First Hill and Belltown would take that title), the census tract boundaries treat it well. The nearest 60-70 acres totaled over 50,000 per square mile in the census, the highest of any tract in the Western US outside California.

What a fantastic set. I really miss Seattle sometimes, especially when I see sets like this. Its such a cool and truely laid back city. I'll be back for a visit soon.
