From my own personal experience, I'd say that the best way to learn a new language fairly late in one's life is to live with someone who speaks the language (roommate, girlfriend or boyfriend). I moved to Toronto in the 90s without knowing much English. The first year was rough... I managed to learn the language over the years, but it wasn't until my (English speaking) girlfriend and I moved in together that I truly began to gain a respectable fluency level. This was true immersion, metaphorically and literally speaking

Hey Brandon - the only way you will truly learn the language is to go balls-first into it and don't give up, even if it feels like you aren't making progress, you are.. trust me. It took me 3 years of living in mainly francophone neighbourhoods and working with french colleagues to learn the language...every time someone switches to english to accommodate you it's a step back.. you just have to keep on it and eventually you'll be fluent enough that they'll think, "ok, he understands me.. I won't switch to english". once you hit that point, you'll take off. this is what happened with me, anyway.. once I found my way back from the side of the road entre Saguenay et Québec.

ps I have a wife from Quebec City and two bilingual kids under the age of four.

^Maybe someday, but for now it does feel a bit daunting. I'll keep your experience in mind to motivate.

Brandon. You can try a language program called Pimsleur. You can find it for free easy enough. It may be worth a shot; it was helpful to me and I was learning Russian which is a whole other ballgame.

French and English share many words, so your vocabulary is already bigger than you think. Give it some time and you will be able to speak soon enough.

I bought some Pimsleur cd's, but honestly I didn't put the energy into it that I should have. They do seem like a decent starting point, but it goes so quickly.
