1. Most highly concentrated in the north San Fernando Valley, Latinos are now the region’s largest ethnic group.

2. With 47% of its population of Chinese descent, Monterey Park is the first mainland American city to have an Asian majority.

3. An empty industrial relic in 1990, Playa Vista is now one of L.A.’s most racially and ethnically diverse communities.

4. African Americans continue to leave South L.A. Compton is now 65% Latino, though there are no Latinos on the city council.

LA projections for 20 years from now.

South Central will continue to see Latinos displace blacks.

The Westside will be stay majority white but see a significant increase in the number of Asian, especially in Westwood, West LA, and Palms.

The mid city area will also see a slight increase in the number of Asians.

Downtown LA will see and increase in both Whites and Asians as it gentrifies.

The San Gabriel Valley will continue to see its Asian population grow, Pasadena and South Pasadena will beccome more Asian.

The San Fernando Valley is hard to say since most of the lower and medium income areas are already heavily hispanic.

A very minor quibble: This is not a majority but a plurality.

Yeah that should state that Monterey Park is in fact 66.9% Asian (with 47% of its resident of Chinese descent), which does give it a strong majority.

Something's still wrong with that Monterey Park stat - there are quite a few Bay Area cities with Asian majorities (Daly City, Fremont, Cupertino to name three fairly large cities). Perhaps it's the American city with the highest percentage of Asians? I'm sure there are others in the LA area with Asian majorities as well.

Japanese: 98.5%
Korean: 0.5%
Chinese: 0.4%
Other: 0.7%

It was the first mainland city to crack 50% (and possibly still the highest proportionally?) Milpitas, Cupertino and Daly City are all pushing or above 60% nowadays too though.

Looked up information on Pittsburgh. It looks like there's a very small isolated cluster of Asians just out the Parkway near Green Tree in addition to the rather small amount in Oakland and East Liberty.

Black: North Side, Hill District, Homewood, and in the Beltzhoover/Allentown section.

White, yeah they're just about everywhere, and the city's Hispanic population is miniscule at best, altho it does look like there's a bit of a presence in Beechview...

I think the predictions are pretty spot on for LA except that i see the San Fernando valley getting more Asian immigrants and 2nd or 3rd generation Hispanic Americans. The bigger question to ponder is where Hispanic growth will be considering that it's leveled off in recent years. Growth in the Asian population shows no signs of slowing down though.

As for where we all are in Austin... we don't really have neighborhoods like LA. I would guess a safe assumption would be hispanics % of the population will be higher on the east side of Austin than on the west with Asian % higher on the North, West and South sides of Austin than in the east. Whites all over but highest in the west, and maybe more black % on the east side and a bit to the south than west.

I think the reference is to Compton, not LA. There have been lots of Latinos on the council over the years.

Agree that the comment was confusing. There was some discussion last year that Monterey Park or some other San Gabriel Valley city would become the fist majority Chinese city in the US (as you note, several have Asian majorities and/or Chinese pluralities). I don't know that any city made it to 50 percent plus 1 Chinese but several are close. Cupertino may be there as well.

Of course these are official numbers which may undercount recent arrivals, legal or otherwise.

I imagine that Pittsburgh will break down like this in 2020:

62% white
26% black
8% Asian
4% Native American/Pacific Islander/multiracial
4% Hispanic origin


And I imagine that Allegheny County will break down like this:

76% white
14% black
6% Asian
4% Native American/Pacific Islander/multiracial
3% Hispanic origin


The outlying counties in the Pittsburgh MSA will remain mostly white, although Beaver and Fayette Counties will become blacker, and Butler and Washington Counties will become more Asian. Westmoreland County will become both blacker and more Asian. Armstrong County will remain lily-white.

But all these places are suburbs, not really a city.
Monterey Park is also a suburb.
Having a some suburbs with an asian majority is not really the same in my opinion than having the metropolitan or the city core with an asian majority.
