Thus ended the driest period on record, straight after the coldest summer. The city in a cold drought, now technically classed as semi-arid, with hosepipe bans in force and water levels at their lowest. The London area, for all its overcast skies, does actually have the lowest rainfalls in the country, normally on a par with Tel Aviv and Melbourne, but this is unprecedented. The Thames, freed from overspilling sewers in heavy rains, flows clean enough for salmon to return, porpoises to be spotted and people to swim. But not for long. The dry, hard winter, and sunny spring will end with record rainfall, a month's worth each day, and just in time for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, and the Olympics. This, the interlude before it all goes messy.
SPRING is in the air
