LOL... I know exactly what it means Gotta love living in the inner city

We heard that a bunch of protest sympathizers were just arrested in one of the Bentall buildings' stairwells in Van... apparently trying to gain access to the roof to hang a banner in support of Mtl. We're now sweeping all our stairwells.

Okay, outside of pyrotechnics, what is the allusion to steel-wool?

They should better consider that they already pay by far the lowest in Canada and even after these increases, it will still be the lowest. The protests seem out of line when looking at the bigger picture across the country.

Those who know anything about the protests know that they are FAR more than just about student tuition. It has become a national (Quebec) struggle against every facet of Government and corporate corruption and cronyism.

Canadians always like to say that Quebec is a broken province. Well it is, and the Quebec people are sick of it. The Quebec people are telling those in power what they really think of their policies and actions.

As for the image of the city, my foreign friends living here are all taking part, my friends abroad are fascinated.

This statement is false. Manitoba and Newfoundland will have lower fees. Anyway, why should we compare ourselves with the others when we are better than them?

I just visited Montreal 3 weeks ago and I was not impressed. I have been to montreal 4 times now and this past time was a real let down. The people were terribly rude just asking a simple question like is there an atm in the building I was treated like I pissed in their coffee the drivers were all driving like it was a forumula one race without any regard for the public safety and these students were sort of just the cherry on the cake for a terrible trip.

Having lived in both cities and this really resonates with me

Drunk assholes from Surrey on an average Friday night on Granville have given me more problems than the protesters ever have.

Montréal has always been a city of protests. This won't change the opinion of most for the city. As for the protesters they should be thankful that even with a modest tuition increase they'll still be paying less then the rest of Canada for their education. I paid $16,000 7 years ago for an 8 month program here in Toronto.

Of course (I apologize if it was not clear)! What I meant was "Why should we try to mimic the others if they do something wrong" (I think that high tuition fees are a mistake).

Well are the people of Quebec prepared to pay higher taxes so that the schools can continue to improve not to mention offer decent wages to staff and the educators? If not tuition fees must rise or the quality of your universities and colleges will continue to slide. Personally I would pay higher taxes if it meant giving more people a fair chance at life.

What is the issue? Is it tuition increases, corruption, globalization, income inequality, Quebec nationalism, global warming, the union movement? This protest only reinforces the perception of Quebec politics as disingenuous. It makes for great media with the student leader wearing the $4,000 suit and a guy in a plush panda costume smashing a store window.

I hope the federal government stays completely on the sidelines and lets this three ring circus self destruct.

I would pay higher taxes too. However, it is not even necessary on a short-time basis, considering the fact that the total cost of education in Québec is already higher than in the rest of Canada (~ $ 29 000 vs ~ $ 28 000).

per year - Gov.ca

On average, undergraduate students in Ontario paid the highest fees ($6,307) in Canada, followed by students in New Brunswick who paid average university tuition fees of $5,516.

Undergrads in Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador continued to have the lowest tuition fees, averaging $2,415 and $2,624 respectively.
