Detroit River Kayak Trip...more to come?

Part two http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=200983

Remembering Steely Dan's kayak photo tours of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and Ohio Rivers a couple of years back I decided to do one myself.

This is one of a stretch of the Detroit River from Lake St Clair to a pebble beach on the edge of downtown Windsor just east of the Ren Cen.

There's not a whole lot here of the American side, at least up close, due to my current unfamiliarity with the newer border regulations vis a vis recreational craft. It's not like the old days when you could just drop into Sindbad's for a bite and a beer.

BTW, check out Steely's tours here:

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...=Chicago+River

Stop 26, put in spot.

I'll be heading for that island in the background

Stop 26 on the left, Sand Point beach/picnic area/night time skinny-dipping spot on the right

Lake St Clair

Approaching Peche (locals pronounce it 'Peach') Island, the Grosse Pointes {pronounced 'Grossy Pointy' [jk]) in the distance.

Lakeview and Riverside Marinas across the way with Little River between them.

Windsor Yacht Cub next to Solidarity Tower

Mens', Womens', Other

There's about two feet of water here entering the canals from the Detroit River. Two and three decades ago we brought sailboats in here with keels that drew three or more feet of water depth. This is how the world would work if humans disappeared, much like that Life After People documentary.

Sandy stream. I'd like to say my expert paddling got me through the winding channels, but I can't. I'm hard aground at this point. The water's dropped some in only a week or two.

Getting out for a stretch.....Nearby ruins of the Walker mansion

Back to the water

Western point of the island.

Due to erosion the beach is only about half the length it used to be. That's Belle Isle across the way.

There used to be a sand spit here. In the distance, two of the remaining Seven Sisters, Channel light and Greyhaven.

Heading back to the Canadian side

I'm going to stop posting here for now and get to the rest a little later.

I think a lot of Detroiters and Windsorites take for granted our gem of a waterfront. It makes me want to get my kayak out for the day. Thanks!

Detroit has to have the most beautiful "river" in the US.

I need to get a sea kayak! Here in DC, there are some great places along the Potomac and Anacostia to visit.

and also likely the cleanest urban river of any US city.

i'd swim in the detroit river, but i don't think i'd take a dip in any other urban river in the nation.

if your intended use is to kayak on rivers, then you don't want a sea kayak. sea kayaks make design gestures towards straight line stability that come at a cost to maneuverability. increased straight line stability is great when you're battling wind and waves in open water, but no so much when you're trying to navigate twisting currents in a river.

I just don't know why you wouldn't want to dip your toes in the mighty Mississippi at St. Louis or the epic Ohio at Louisville?

Actually I have always imagined the Mississippi to be clean-ish @ Minneapolis.

It's actually fairly clean in Minneapolis. I would swim in it without worries. I would even eat fish from out of it upstream of downtown.

Love how clear the water of the Great Lakes is, that's the biggest fresh (or sweet) water reserve on the planet! it's even hard to figure there's no salt in there, cause it's as large as a regular sea.
And looks even flatter than the Mediterranean. Any moron for trying surfing over there?

It is very clean! The cleanest "river" of any large city I've ever lived in. I swim, kayak, and paddleboard in it quite often. The turquoise water is part of the allure of the Great Lakes Region, imo.

Here is the popular Belle Isle Beach in the City of Detroit:

the great lakes are the largest reserve of surface fresh water by surface area, but lake baikal in russia is slightly larger by volume because it's an incredibly large and DEEP lake (over 1 mile deep at its lowest point, making it the deepest lake in the world). the great lakes are quite shallow in comparison to lake baikal (though still pretty deep measured against most other lakes, lake superior is over 1,300 ft. at its deepest point).

either way, together lake Baikal and the great lakes add up to about 40% of the world's surface fresh water (ie. not including ground water or water locked up in ice in the polar regions). it's pretty wild to think that nearly half of the planet's surface freshwater is in just lake baikal and the great lakes of north america.

here's a conversation i had with my british friend's father who was visiting chicago for the first time. i took them up to milwaukee for a little day-trip, milwaukee being roughly 1.5-2 hours north of chicago, depending on traffic. upon arriving at the milwaukee art museum, my friend's dad looked out across the vast blue expanse of lake michigan and remarked:

friend's dad: "my god, another unfathomably large lake just like the one down in chicago. these lakes truly are remarkable, we've nothing like them back in blighty."

me: "oh no, this is still the same lake as the one down in chicago, it's all lake michigan."

friend's dad: "you mean we've just been traveling for a couple of hours on the motorway and we're still along the shore of the same lake?! unbelievable. exactly how large is this lake?"

me: "about 300 miles long in the north-south direction."

friend's dad: "bloody hell! 300 miles long! that's almost the length of england itself! and you yanks call this vast sea a mere lake?"

me: "well, it is all freshwater....... and there are 4 more of them to boot."

friend's dad: "unbelievable." <shaking his head in disbelief>

he had some prior awareness that the great lakes were big, but in his mind, when we traveled from chicago to milwaukee, he had assumed that we had traveled from one great lake to another great lake, his mind had come nowhere close to wrapping itself around the true size and scale of the great lakes, because back home in britain, what he knew as "lakes" are simply small puddles in comparison to a body of water like lake michigan.

the great lakes can be extremely placid and flat at times, and dreadfully violent at others. the notorious lake storms of novemeber have taken hundreds upon hundreds of ships to the bottom of the lakes over the decades.

a november storm on board a great lakes freighter in lake superior:

it's not hawaii or the pacific coast or anything, but there are places with enough wave action for surfing on the great lakes:

Great. I had no idea about those lake storms. I totally understand your friend's British dad, those large lakes are sort of beyond Western Europe's understanding or habits. It's somewhat exotic to us.
That surfer is badass! it's freezing in the storm season!

The Great Lakes are part of a large water system... water flows in, water flows out to the ocean -- so no salt accumulation. Size has nothing to do with it. There are smaller lakes that are salt... because they have no outlets.

As for flat...
