Indiana is the target of a lot of unfair stereotyping. There are some redneck areas, particulary south, that harbor pockets of racial and sexual intolerance and there are some residual Klan-infested areas, but there are a lot of progressive cities and towns, too. Spencer benefits from being near Bloomington, home of Indiana University.
Ever since his election, Fort Wayne's current mayor has attended the Gay/Lesbian Dinner Dance at the Grand Wayne Center along with his wife and sometimes with members of his staff, and has read a proclamation celebrating the event. An out lesbian ran for sheriff in a recent election, and although she lost the election because of partisan politics, her sexual orientation never came up in the campaign. Most of our major urban areas are gay-supportive, and many major employers have officially made sexual-orientation a non-issue in their hiring and promotion policies. Small cities that are growth-focused generally have recognized that homophobic attitudes and policies work against them.
